KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Virginia Tech freshman Vlad Puchko provided a strong performance for the Hokies on day one of the Tennessee Invite finishing first in discus with a personal-best mark of 201' 0" (61.26m).
"Vlad had a great overall series and a big sixth round throw," said associate head coach Andrew Dubs. Puchko ranks fifth in the NCAA and is second on the Hokies all-time performance list.
Assistant throws coach Essence Henderson won the women's discus with a throw of 184' 9" (56.31m), meeting the minimum qualifying standards for the U.S. Olympic Trials in June.
Hurricane Alumni Invitational - Jumps / Multi
In Coral Gables, Victoria Gorlova placed first in long jump at the Hurricane Alumni Invitational with a second round mark of 20' 9" (6.32m). Gorlova started her outdoor campaign ranked eighth in the East Region and second in the conference.
Decathlete Sean Murphy sits second with 3975 points after the first five events of the decathlon. Murphy's day one score is highlighted by a second place finish in both shot put (14.23m) and high jump (1.97m).
Colonial Relays - Distance
Hokies dominated the women's 1500m invite in Williamsburg,Va. placing 1-2-3 in the distance season-opener. Junior Star Price crossed the finish line first with a time of 4:23.63, followed by Elizabeth Coe in second (4:25.65) and Lila Waters in third (4:28.43).
Sophomore Nick Plant won the men's 1500m invite with a personal-best time of 3:41.78, ranked 15th in the NCAA. Tech alum Ben Nagel placed second in the event at 3:41.98. Dylan DeCambre stopped the clock in third with a personal-best time of 3:47.00.
Senior Lindsey Butler placed second, first among collegiate athletes, in her first-ever 5000m run clocking a time of 16:17.59. Declan Rymer won the men's race with a personal-best time of 13:58.38.
In the 10,000m run, Alec Fleming led the race recording a personal-best time of 29:52.45. Senior Sam Hubert finished third with a personal-best time of 30:20.59, and Trevor Mason fourth (30:40.69).
Mary Kate McGranahan made her season debut finishing third in the women's 10,000m clocking a personal-best time of 35:33.55.
