BLACKSBURG – Senior Rebecca Mammel broke the Atlantic Coast Conference indoor record in the women's weight throw on Day One of the Virginia Tech Challenge in Blacksburg, Va.
Day One Results - Virginia Tech Challenge
On her final attempt of the day, Mammel launched the weight 77' 8.75" (23.96m), overthrowing the previous record of 76' 5.75 (23.31m) set by Rachel Tanczos of Notre Dame in 2020.
The Hokies claimed nine event wins on Day One of the Virginia Tech Challenge with Julia Fixsen winning the women's pole vault clearing a height of 4.41m (14' 5.5") on her second attempt. Kenna Stimmel placed second clearing the same height of 4.41m (14' 5.5") on her third attempt.
Senior Harrison Rice moved into first in the ACC clearing a personal-best height of 17' 6.5" (5.35m), finishing first among collegiate-athletes.
Jumps
Caleb Stephens won the men's long jump with a mark of 23' 8.75" (7.23m). Varun Narayan tied Stephens' mark of 23' 8.75" (7.23m) but was awarded second based on the athletes second-best attempt.
Distance
Junior Grace Boone finished first in the 600-meters clocking a personal-best time of 1:31.99. Freshman Nick Plant won the men's 600m with a time of 1:19.37.
In the women's 800m, Maxana Grubb attained a personal-best time of 2:15.56. Alec Fleming placed seventh in the mile with a season-best time of 4:14.33.
Sprints / Hurdles
Sean Murphy crossed the finish line first in the men's 60m hurdles clocking a personal-best time of 8.24. Sydney Beverly finished third in the women's 60m hurdles clocking a personal-best time 8.87.
Freshman Amir Green claimed first place for the Hokies in the men's 400m dash running a personal-best time of 48.37. Sprinter Chad Blaker ran a personal-best time of 6.95 in the 60-meters, finishing third.
Throws
Khalil Bedoui is ranked sixth in DI after throwing a personal-best distance of 68' 3" (20.80m).
JDL DMR Invitational
Viktor Idhammar, Kennedy Harrison, Arlo Ludewick, and Antonio Lopez Segura are ranked ninth in the nation after clocking a time of 9:38.34 (converted to 9:30.59) in the men's distance medley relay in Winston-Salem, N.C. Lopez Segura ran anchor in the DMR clocking 4:02.89 in the final 1600m to put the Hokies in the NCAA top 16.
The women's DMR team of Ava Hassebrock, Star Price, Hannah Ballowe, and Lindsey Butler finished third with a time of 11:04.98 (converted to 10:57.97) and are currently ranked fourth in the ACC.
Senior Ben Nagel won the men's 1000m with a personal-best time of 2:35.59.
