Lopez Segura breaks 10,000m school record at Bryan Clay Invitational

AZUSA, Calif. - Senior Antonio Lopez Segura took down the 38-year-old Virginia Tech school record in the outdoor 10,000-meters clocking in a time of 28:09.86 at the Bryan Clay Invitational on Thursday night in the rain. The previous record of 28:45.97 was set in 1985 by Mark Stickley. 

The Hokies distance squad carried Lopez Segura's momentum with them as they went on to claim five event wins at the Mt. SAC Relays in the first two days of the meet. Alec Fleming won the men's 3000m steeplechase Thursday night at the Mt. SAC relays clocking in a personal-best time of 8:50.65. Sophomore Declan Rymer finished fifth in the elite section of the steeplechase crossing the finish line with a personal-best time of 8:46.58. Fleming and Rymer's times currently rank within the top five of the ACC this season. 

On Friday, Ben Nagel and Nick Plant went first and second in the 800m with Nagel leading the way clocking in at 1:14.18. Plant followed closely behind attaining a time of 1:48.71. Midway through the outdoor season, Nagel and Plant are ranked within the NCAA top 25 and the ACC top 10. Sophomore Star Price was nothing but smiles as she crossed the finish line first in the women's 800m with a personal-best time of 2:05.17. Price holds the second fastest time in the conference this season. 

Fellow distance runners Viktor Idhammar and Arlo Ludewick placed first and third in the men's 1500m elite clocking in personal-best times of 3:42.83 for Idhammar and 3:44.02 for Ludewick. Idhammar's time ranks eight in the ACC. Freshman Ethan Coleman won his first collegiate race this season crossing the finish line first in the men's 1500m with a personal-best time of 3:46.73. 

Throws
Freshman Katrin Brzyszkowska made the finals of shot put attaining a mark of 52'0.75" (15.87m) on her third attempt of the day. Brzyszkowska went on to throw three more times, finishing fourth overall with her third throw in the prelims being her best mark of the day. Senior Rebecca Mammel threw a season-best mark of 143'11" (43.87m) in the discus finishing 10th. 

Pole Vault 
Senior Jake Spotswood claimed second in the men's pole vault C group clearing a height of 16'10.75" (5.15m) on his first attempt. In group A, Jacob Rice placed eighth clearing 16' 10.75" (5.15m), followed by Conner McClure in ninth with a height of 16'4.75" (5.00m). Over at the women's pit, Emily Connor finished fourth in group C jumping 19' 9.75" (3.60m), Hayley Horvath finished sixth in group A with a season-best height of 13'7.25" (4.15m). 

Jumps
In a field of 50, long jumper Cierra Pyles finished 10th with a distance of 19'4.25" (5.90m). 

Bryan Clay Invitational 
In a field of 130 athletes, Lindsey Butler crossed the finish line 10th in the 800m invite with a time of 2:02.78. Butler held her own in a race stacked with three of the top five ranked NCAA female athletes, as well as three professional athletes. In the men's 5000m open, Trevor Mason finished ninth in heat one with a time of 14:31.90. 

Ending the night for the Hokies, Ava Hassebrock finished eighth in heat three of the 5000m clocking in a personal-best time of 16:15.29. 

The Hokies return to action on Saturday competing at the Mt. SAC Relays, Bryan Clay Invitational, and Beach Invitational.
