Killinen and McClure lead Hokies on day one of ACC Championships

BOSTON, MASS. – The Virginia Tech men's and women's track and field teams completed day one of the ACC Indoor Championships with two individual champions in the field.

Junior Sara Killinen claimed the women's first conference title of the meet throwing 72' 11.25" (22.23m) in the women's weight throw.
 
"Today's competition was full of excitement on many different levels," said associate head coach Andrew Dubs. "Sara maintained her composure staying focused on what she needed to do to execute her throws. She continued to do focus throughout the competition and put it all on the line in the sixth round. I could not be any prouder of her."
 
Killinen was sitting in second prior to her final attempt with a round two throw of  69' 11.75" (21.33m). Barbora Stejfova finished fifth with a mark of 64' 11.50" (19.80m). The duo tallied 14 of the Hokies 15 points on day one.
 
The women's DMR of Lila Waters, Annie Sullivan, Avery Legault, and Ava Hassebrock scored one point finishing eighth with a time of 11:25.40.
 
Men
Two-time ACC Indoor Champion Conner McClure ranks 10th in the nation clearing a personal-best height of 18' 1.75" (5.53m) at the conference championships. McClure had secured the win clearing 17' 7.25" (5.37m) on his first attempt but decided to continue on. Fighting for a spot at Nationals, he cleared 5.53m on his second attempt moving back into the top-16.
 
Freshman Maddox Hamm finished third in the pole vault at a height of 16' 11.25" (5.17m). Joey Badalamenti added one point to the men's score finishing eighth at 16' 3.25" (4.97m). The men's pole vault team tallied 17 points for the Hokies.
 
Ethan Mills, Amir Green, Christian Jackson, and Declan Rymer finished seventh in the men's distance medley relay with a time of 9:42.47, scoring two points.
 
Ali Diaby clocked a qualifying time in the 200m prelims finishing first in his heat with a time of 21.09. Diaby ran the third fastest time of the day and will compete in the finals on Saturday at 2:10 p.m.
 
In the heptathlon, Sean Murphy and Nate Paris are in the top five after four events with three to go on Friday. Murphy is currently in fourth with 3161 points, followed by Nate Paris with 3155.
