BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech men's and women's track and field distance teams will travel across the state to Charlottesville, Va. on Friday, Apr. 20 - Saturday, Apr. 21 to compete at the Virginia Challenge.
Coming off their successful three meet weekend in California, the women's team is ranked 20th in the nation while the men are ranked first in the southeast region. Distance runner Lindsey Butler claimed a spot in the NCAA top 15 finishing 10th at the Bryan Clay Invitational with a season-best 800m time of 2:02.78.
Butler will be joined by fellow teammates Hannah Ballowe and Ava Hassebrock in the 1500m. Ballowe ranks eighth in the ACC 800m clocking a time of 2:06.43 at the Mt. SAC Relays. Hassebrock is ninth in the conference in the 5000m after running a personal-best time of 16:15.29 at the Bryan Clay Invitational.
Scheduled to compete in the 400m is sophomore Star Price. Price is coming off a two meet victory in the 800-meters last weekend having first won the Mt. SAC Relays with a personal-best time of 2:05.17. Price competed the next day at the Beach Invitational crossing the line first with a time of 2:06.71.
For the men's team, Ben Nagel, Nick Plant, Viktor Idhammar, and Ethan Coleman are schedule to compete in the 800m. Nagel and Plant finished first and second in the 800m at the Mt. SAC Relays with Nagel leading the way with a time of 1:48.18. Plant followed closely behind clocking in a personal-best time of 1:48.71.
Idhammar started the trip in California winning the Mt. SAC Relays 1500m elite race with a time of 3:42.83. The next day, Idhammar clocked a personal-best time of 3:41.05 at the Bryan Clay Invitational, currently ranked fifth in the ACC. Coleman won the 1500m at the Mt. SAC Relays with a personal-best time of 3:43.28, ranked 13th in the ACC.
In the rain, Antonio Lopez Segura broke the Virginia Tech 10,000m outdoor record last weekend competing at the Bryan Clay Invitational. Lopez Segura crossed the lin ninth with the fastest time in the conference this season 28:09.86. He is ranked first in the ACC and 15th in the NCAA.
Hokies will start their day on Friday competing in the women's 400m schedule for 4:50 p.m. The Virginia Challenge will be live streamed on ACC Network Extra from 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. on Friday.
