Stimmel ranked first in the Nation as Hokies wrap up opening weekend

RALEIGH, N.C., COLUMBIA, S.C., and LYNCHBURG, Va.  - The Virginia Tech men's and women's track and field teams closed out the three meet opening weekend with several Hokies ranked within the NCAA top-16. Freshman Kenna Stimmel made her mark on the outdoor season clearing a height of 14' 7.25" (4.45m) in the women's pole vault at the Weems Baskin Invitational.

Stimmel starts the season ranked first in the NCAA. Hayley Horvath finished fourth clearing 13' 3.50" (4.05m), ranked 14th in the NCAA. On the men's side, Joseph Badalamenti finished fifth in the clearing the bar at 15' 7.75" (4.77m). 

Sprints 
The men's 4x400m relay team of Kennedy Harrison, Maximus James, Judson Lincoln IV, and Amir Green finished first with the sixth fastest time in the Nation (3:08.38). Lincoln IV placed second in the 400m invite clocking in a time of 46.17, fifth fastest time in the NCAA this season. Sophomore Torrence Walker placed second in the 100m invite with a time of 10.52. 

Jumps 
Cierra Pyles finished second in the women's long jump invite with a personal-best distance of 19' 5.50" (5.93m). Varun Narayan finished third in the men's event with a distance of 23' 6.00" (7.16m), followed by Caleb Stephens in fifth with a mark of 23' 4.00" (7.11m).  High Jumpers Aidan Clark and EJ Bell placed third and fourth in the field of 14. Clark is currently ranked second in the ACC after clearing a height of 6' 8.00" (2.03m), Bell cleared 6' 6.00" (1.98m). 

Throws (Raleigh Relays) 
Senior Rebecca Mammel finished fourth in the women's hammer throw with a distance of 197' 4.00" (60.16m) on her third attempt of the day. Mammel's mark is ranked fourth in the ACC. Khalil Bedoui finished fifth in the men's hammer throw with a mark of 207' 9.00" (63.32m), ranked third in the ACC. 
 
Distance (Lynchburg) 
Tech dominated the men's 1500m finishing first, second, and third at the Toms Alumni Invitational in Lynchburg. Ben Nagel crossed the finish line first with a time 3:45.18 followed by Nick Plant in second (3:46.08) and Ethan Coleman in third (3:47.36). Nagel finished fifth in the 400m with a time of 50.32. 

Freshman Ryan Chevalier won his first meet of the season clocking a time of 14:46.03 in the 5000m. Garrett Winter finished third with a time of 14:52.62, Blake Fairbanks crossed fourth (14:54.11). 

Up Next 
The Virginia Tech sprints/hurdles, jumps, and throws squads will travel to Gainesville, Fla. to compete at the Florida Relays on March 31 - April 1. The pole vault team is scheduled to compete at the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas on March 29 - April 1. Distance will continue their season competing at the VertKlasse Meet in High Point, N.C. on March 31 - April 1.
