Phillips returned to his alma mater in the spring of 2024. He played receiver for the Hokies from 2014-17 where he played in 52 games, starting 44, following a successful high school career at DeMatha High School in Maryland, where he played three seasons for Hokies’ running backs coach Elijah Brooks. Phillips is the Hokies’ the all-time leader in receptions (236) and receiving yards (3,027). He was the MVP of the 2016 Belk Bowl, with 6 receptions for 115 yards in the 35-24 win over Arkansas. During the 2017 season, Phillips set a school record 14 receptions against East Carolina including three touchdowns.
Phillips played for the Buffalo Bills in 2018-19 before spending the 2020 season in the XFL with the Houston Roughnecks, finishing the season with 31 receptions for a league high 455 yards and 9 touchdowns. He spent the 2020 NFL season with the Carolina Panthers. Phillips played the last three seasons (2021-23) in the Canadian Football League with the Toronto Argonauts, winning the Grey Cup in 2022, recording 38 receptions and three touchdowns on the year.
