Prior to Virginia Tech: Ferguson began his career in the performance industry as an assistant strength and conditioning director at Ohio University in 2004, overseeing training programs for baseball, women’s soccer, wrestling and volleyball.
A native of Goodview, Virginia, Ferguson served as assistant director of strength and conditioning at North Carolina during the 2005–06 season, working with the football and women’s basketball programs.
Ferguson enjoyed a 13-year tenure on Tech’s strength and conditioning staff, working under the tutelage of his former strength and conditioning coach, Dr. Mike Gentry, a member of the USA Strength and Conditioning Coaches Hall of Fame. During that span, he served as senior director of strength and conditioning for football from 2006–17 and senior director of strength and conditioning for Olympic sports in 2018.
In 2018, Ferguson founded Steel Train Performance in Moneta, Virginia. He later served as the strength and conditioning coach at his alma mater, Staunton River High School from 2020–22 before returning to Blacksburg in 2022 as an assistant director of strength and conditioning with the football program. He was named Assistant Athletic Director of Football Strength and Conditioning for the 2025 season.
In 2017, Ferguson earned the prestigious Master Strength and Conditioning Coach (MSCC) distinction from the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association, the highest honor in the profession.

Personal: Ferguson played running back for head coach Frank Beamer and the Hokies from 1998–2001, contributing to four bowl teams, including the squad that played in the 1999 National Championship Game. He was selected by the Buffalo Bills in the seventh round of the 2002 NFL Draft.
