BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech track and field ended Day One of the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championship with three conference champions and two meet records. The women's team is currently in first place with 48 points. The men's team is in second with 21 points as Louisville leads the pack with 25.5 points.
Rebecca Mammel, Sara Killinen, and Barbora Stejfova put the Hokies on the board as they claimed the first points of the day finishing first, second, and fourth in the women's weight throw, respectively. Mammel claimed her second consecutive ACC Indoor Championship title throwing a meet record distance of 76' 5" (23.29m). Sara Killinen placed second with a personal-best mark of 74' 4.25" (22.66m), Barbora Stejfova finished fourth (66' 7" (20.29m)).
Freshman Kenna Stimmel made her first ACC Indoor Championship appearance winning the women's pole vault with a height of 14' 5.25" ( 4.40m). Julia Fixsen placed second clearing 14' 5.25" (4.40m), followed by Hayley Horvath at 13' 5.25" (4.10m).
The women's field squads earned a combined 44 points, putting the Hokies into first place. The distance medley relay team of Hannah Ballowe, Barbora Malikova, Grace Boone, and Lindsey Butler added four points to the team total finishing fifth with a time of 11:02.93.
Arlo Ludewick, Amir Green, Nicholas Plant, and Antonio Lopez Segura claimed first in the men's distance medley relay with a meet record time of 9:28.86, adding 10 points to the men's score. Elijah Bell and Aidan Clark finished third and fourth in the men's high jump clearing a height of 6'11.5" (2.12m).
In the men's heptathlon, Sean Murphy is in third place with 3,147 points after the first four events. Murphy placed second in the shot put and high jump events. Jacob Spotswood sits in seventh with 2,920 points.
Senior Cole Beck advances to the 200m finals on Saturday after clocking a personal-best time of 20.82 in the prelims. Beck clocked the third fastest time in the prelims, finishing second in heat five.
Day Two of the ACC Championships begins at 11:00 a.m. with the men's heptathlon. Field events are scheduled to begin with the women's high jump at 1:00 p.m. The women's mile prelims will kick things off on the track at 3:15 p.m.
