COACHING STAFF

Our program is led by four accomplished coaches with elite basketball minds— Mike Young, Chester Frazier, J.D. Byers and Kevin Giltner—who have all competed and coached at the highest levels and know what it takes to mold champions, not just in the ACC but in life.

HEAD COACH MIKE YOUNG

Since arriving in 2019, Hokies head coach Mike Young has delivered the program’s first ACC title, multiple wins over top-five teams, and a national reputation for smart, fearless basketball. Known for his elite basketball IQ and uncanny ability to connect with people, Young has elevated Virginia Tech with a championship pedigree and a culture built on toughness, shooting, and player development. A two-time National Coach of the Year and five-time conference Coach of the Year, Young’s resume speaks for itself, and the best is yet to come.

400 Career Wins and Counting

Coach Mike Young reached a major milestone this past season, earning his 400th career victory on January 29, 2025, in a win over Florida State. He now stands among an elite group—one of only a select number of active Division I head coaches with 400 or more career wins. From his early success at Wofford to his continued impact at Virginia Tech, he’s built a legacy centered around player development, postseason success, and sustained excellence. 400 wins and he's still rolling.

5-0 in Conference Title Games
5-0 in Conference Title Games

When the stakes are highest, Coach Mike Young delivers. He holds a perfect 5–0 record in conference championship games, winning every title game he’s ever coached in. That unblemished streak includes four Southern Conference Tournament titles at Wofford (2010, 2011, 2014, 2015) and a historic ACC Tournament Championship in 2022—Virginia Tech’s first-ever ACC title. Young’s ability to rise to the occasion in championship moments is a defining part of his coaching legacy.

Before coming to Virginia Tech, he guided Wofford to five NCAA bids (2010, 2011, 2014, 2015, 2019), with his 2019 squad making national headlines by advancing to the second round after a statement win in the first.
