Jennifer Brown joined the Hokies in April 2016 as an assistant coach.
Brown is entering her 11th season of collegiate coaching, having spent eight of her 10 years alongside head coach Kenny Brooks, completing six seasons at James Madison University before arriving at Virginia Tech. She also spent two seasons as an assistant at Colgate University.
Brown’s primary duties with the Hokies include recruiting coordination, academic coordination, scouting and post development.
In each of her two seasons at Virginia Tech, Brown has helped the Hokies record 20-win seasons, making the postseason both years, including reaching the championship game of the WNIT in 2018.
During her six years at JMU with Brooks, the Dukes compiled an overall record of 165-43 (.793) and won four CAA Championships. The program made six straight trips to the postseason, including four NCAA appearances.
At JMU, Brown coached 2015-16 CAA Rookie of the Year Kayla Cooper-Williams, 2015 WNBA Draft selection Lauren Okafor and Toia Giggetts a 1,000-point scorer and CAA All-Rookie team member.
During JMU’s 2013-14 campaign, she helped the Dukes to one of the most successful seasons in program history as JMU tied a school record 29 wins and advanced to the postseason for the ninth consecutive season. The CAA champion Dukes won their first NCAA Tournament game since 1991 with a 72-63 victory over No. 6 Gonzaga.
Brown, who was recruited to JMU by Brooks, played for the Dukes from 2006-08. In her two seasons as a player, she helped JMU to a 51-16 (.761) record, which included a trip to the NCAA Tournament and a trip to the WNIT. During her junior season (2006-07), JMU compiled a 27-6 record, was runner-up in the CAA Tournament, and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Dukes reached as high as 22nd in the AP Poll and 25th in the USA Today Poll. As a senior in 2007-08, the Dukes put together a 24-10 record, advancing to the Round of 16 of the WNIT, and received votes during the season in both major media polls.
The Brooklyn, New York native earned a bachelor’s degree in justice studies in 2007 and a master’s in kinesiology in 2008, both from JMU.
Brown is also a 2013 graduate of the NCAA Women’s Coaches Academy and NCAA A.C.E. program in 2015.
She remains active in the community and sits on numerous committees at Virginia Tech.
