Michael Shiner

Graduate Assistant

Joined Virginia Tech men’s basketball staff: 2017 and enters his first year with the program as a graduate assistant.

With the Hokies: Shiner will be responsible for assisting with on-court workouts, player development, video duties and day-to-day operations.

Prior to current role: Shiner was a four-year manager for the men’s basketball program before being elevated to a graduate assistant. His responsibilities included video breakdown and operations, assist staff with variety of day-to-day tasks assigned, attend all practices and assist with drills and on-court workouts, record stats at all games and practices, assist with distribution of player equipment, and served as Head Manager where he oversaw other managers and implemented laundry schedule and facility maintenance.

Shiner is Level 2 Hudl Sportscode Scripting certified. Expanding on his video duties, he creates a video playbook of all plays run throughout the year for players to review, assists in scouting opponents through film breakdown, and assists in organization of scout film database of recruits.

Education: Virginia Tech, 2021 (B.A. Communications).

Personal: Native of Palmyra, Virginia, Shiner is currently working on his master’s in agricultural and life sciences with a concentration in leadership studies.
