Senior Director, S/C, Men's Basketball
David Land enters his first year with the Virginia Tech men’s basketball program as its senior director of strength and conditioning.

Prior to Tech, Land was the athletic performance coach for Wofford men’s basketball one year under head coach Mike Young.

In addition to designing and implementing all the strength and conditioning work for the Hokies, Land will work directly with the coaching staff to assist with organizing and scheduling practices and travel to optimize Tech’s competitive advantage in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Land will also work closely with the athletic training and nutrition staffs to monitor both year-around and in-season travel nutrition to assist the players with their body composition goals.

In Land’s one year in Spartanburg, he played a major role in their best season in program history. In addition to helping the Terriers to their first AP Top 25 ranking, 20-game win streak, undefeated conference record (18-0) and their first-ever NCAA tournament win. Land also trained Fletcher Magee, the NCAA’s all-time career leader in made 3-pointers. 

Before Wofford, Land served as the director of Olympic strength and conditioning at Utah State from 2017-2018. Land oversaw the entire sports performance department for non-football sports, being tasked with staff, budgeting and scheduling for all of the Olympic sports for the Aggies.

He spent the previous four years in a similar role at Murray State under head coaches Steve Prohm and Matt McMahon. While he primarily worked with men’s basketball, he also worked with several other teams and helped women’s tennis (2014, 2015), women’s golf (2015, 2017) and men’s basketball (2015) to Ohio Valley Conference Championships.

Land was a large part in the development of point guard Cameron Payne, who was selected as a lottery pick in the 2015 NBA Draft by the Oklahoma City Thunder. During Land’s tenure at Murray State, the Racers became nationally ranked and in 2014-15 season, they rattled off an NCAA-leading 25 consecutive wins.

Land has also had stops at UNC Wilmington, East Tennessee State, Milligan College and NC State. He is certified through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS).

Land, a Raleigh, North Carolina native, graduated from Appalachian State in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and a minor in nutrition. He went on to earn a master’s degree in sports performance from East Tennessee State in 2013, under the world-renowned Meg and Dr. Mike Stone. He is married to his wife, Julie.
