Sterling Johnson

Graduate Assistant
Joined Virginia Tech men’s basketball staff: 2023 and enters his first season with the program as a graduate assistant. 

With the Hokies: Johnson is responsible for assisting with player development, film breakdown and scouting reports.

Prior to Virginia Tech: Johnson came to Tech from Northwood University where he spent one year as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. Previous stops include the University of Northwestern Ohio, Schoolcraft College and Defiance College. Johnson also spent time as a Health Instructor at the Academy of Warren in Detroit, Michigan, as he was responsible for structuring the curriculum, educating students on the importance of their mental and physical wellbeing. Johnson also is the founder of his own basketball camp, named the Sterling Johnson Fundamental Basketball Camp. It is an annual camp targeted for athletes in the Clinton Township and Mount Clemens area in Michigan.

Johnson was a four-year letterwinner for Saginaw Valley State University (2012-16). He and his teammates advanced to the NCAA DII Elite Eight and won the GLIAC in his senior campaign.

Personal: A native of Clinton Township, Michigan, Johnson is currently working on his doctorate in individualized interdisciplinary studies.
