EUGENE, Ore. - The Virginia Tech track and field team wrapped up the first weekend of competition at the US Olympic Team Trials on Monday, as former Tech athlete Vincent Ciattei finished fourth in the 1500m finals.
Finishing 11th in the first round of the 1500m (3:37.68) and sixth in the semifinals (3:34.63), Ciattei needed to run a personal-best time in the finals in order to have a chance at making it into the Olympics. Ciattei started the race in third holding onto his position throughout the first 1200m of the race. In a close finish for third, and the final qualifying spot, Hobes Kessler passed Ciattei clocking in a t 3:31.53, Ciattei placed fourth with a personal-best time of 3:31.78.
Assistant coach (throws) Essence Henderson '23 competed in discus on Monday night recording no mark with three failed attempts.
Sophomore Judson Lincoln IV placed eighth in the 400m semifinals on Sunday achieving an Olympic Standard time of 44.98. Although, Lincoln's time fell short of advancing to the finals by one position in the rankings, based on time. In the first round, he secured an automatic qualifying spot into the semifinals with a time of 44.98.
Junior Conner McClure competed on opening day of the US Olympic Trials placing 20th in the qualifying round at a height of 17' 8.5" (5.40m). McClure cleared the opening height on his first attempt but was unsuccessful at clearing the second bar at 18' 0.5" (5.50m).
Athletes will have a two-day break from competition before returning to action on Thursday, June 27.
