Hokies head to Louisville for ACC Indoor Championships

BLACKSBURG ­– The Virginia Tech men's and women's track and field teams return to Louisville to compete at the 2023 ACC Indoor Championships on Thursday - Saturday, Feb. 23 - 25 at the Norton Healthcare Sports and Learning Complex. The Virginia Tech men and women look to defend their 2022 ACC Indoor Championship titles.

The championship meet begins at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday with the men's heptathlon. Field events will begin at 3:15 p.m. with the women's triple jump., running events are scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m.  

U.S. Track and Field & Cross Country Coaches Association recently ranked the Hokie men first in the ACC as freshman Judson Lincoln IV leads the men's 400m with a time of 45.97.  Harrison Rice is ranked first in the men's pole vault after clearing personal-best height of 17' 6.5" (5.35m) at the Virginia Tech Challenge last weekend in Blacksburg. Jacob Rice is sitting third in pole vault with a personal-best height of 17' 4.5" (5.30m). 

Ali Diaby, Kennedy Harrison, Cole Beck, and Lincoln IV clocked the second-fastest ACC time this season in the men's 4x400m (3:05.49). Individually, Harrison has claimed two top-five conference times this season, ranking second in the 400m (46.29) and fifth in the 200m (20.89).

Senior Tyson Jones is positioned third in shot put with a distance of 61' 5.75" (18.74m). In the multis, heptathlete Sean Murphy attained a personal-best 5,504 points at the Lenny Lyles Invitational on Jan. 27. 

The women's team is nationally ranked ninth by the USTFCCCA, ranking second in the ACC. Kenna Stimmel and Julia Fixsen continue to dominate the women's pole vault ranked tied for first in the ACC clearing a height of 14'7.25" (4.45m). Sophomore Journey Gurley is placed third at 14' 2.5" (4.33m). The women's pole vault squad has maintained its national first-place ranking throughout the entire season. 

In the women's weight throw, ACC record holder Rebecca Mammel will attempt to secure her second indoor conference title on Thursday. Mammel broke the All-Time ACC Record on Feb. 17 throwing 77' 8.75" (23.69m).  Sara Killinen ranks second with a mark of 72' 9" (22.17m).  Senior Essence Henderson will enter the meet on Saturday as the number one seed in the women's shot put with a season-best mark of 55' 7.75" (16.96m). Katrin Brzykowska is ranked third with a distance of 55' 2.75" (16.83m). 

Jumpers Victoria Gorlova and Cierra Pyles are positioned second and third in the women's triple jump. Gorlova jumped a distance of 43' 5" (13.23m) at the Virginia Tech Challenge last weekend. Pyles jumped a season-best 43' 1.75" (13.15m) at the Tiger Paw Invite. 

On the track, 2022 Indoor National Champion Lindsey Butler is once again ranked first in the women's 800m with a time of 2:03.13. Butler broke the Virginia Tech school-record in the mile clocking a time of 4:31.41 at the David Hemery Valentine Invite, ranking third in the ACC. 

Sophomore Layla Anderson broke her own personal-best time in the 60m hurdles three times at the Tiger Paw Invite in Clemson, finishing fourth with a time of 8.13. Anderson ranks first in the ACC over Oneka Wilson of Clemson by 0.01.  

The Hokies are in pursuit of their eighth indoor men's title and fifth indoor women's title. The men's team won the 2022 championships with a score of 105 points. The women's team tied Duke with 86 points. 

COMMONWEALTH CLASH 
Smithfield, the presenting sponsor of the Commonwealth Clash, enters its second year sponsoring the friendly, statewide rivalry between Virginia Tech and Virginia. With 22 individual event points on the line, the school that accumulates 11.5 or more points is crowned the winner and takes home the Commonwealth Clash trophy.
