Tech eager for NCAA East Preliminary Rounds

BLACKSBURG – Championship season rolls on for Virginia Tech track & field this week as the Hokies make the trek to Bloomington, Ind. for the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds to compete for qualification to the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
 
The four-day NCAA preliminary meet is hosted by Indiana and will be held at the Robert C. Haugh Complex in Bloomington, Ind. Live results will be provided by Flash Results and a live broadcast of the meet will be available on IU Media.
 
Tech will send 32 entries to the preliminary rounds, as the Hokies' men's squad competes on Wednesday and Friday, and the women's team competes on Thursday and Saturday.

WHAT'S AT STAKE
Athletes are chasing qualification to the 100th edition of the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, set to be held from June 8-11 at Oregon's historic Hayward Field. Athletes with the top 12 times/marks and the best 12 relay teams at both the East and West Preliminary Rounds will qualify for the NCAA Championships in Eugene.
 
ATHLETES COMPETING
Tech will have 16 men's athletes competing across 17 events in Bloomington, with Khalil Bedoui kicking off the Hokies at 10 AM on Wednesday with the hammer competition. Joining Bedoui across the first day's field events will be KJ Moore in the long jump and Tyson Jones in the shot put. On the track, Cole Beck and Kahleje Tillmon will look to advance to Friday's quarterfinal rounds in the 100m and 200m, while Kennedy Harrison and Tyreke Sapp take on the first section of the 400m. Seb Anthony headlines the Hokies' men's middle-distance as he takes on the 800m.
 
The Hokie women open their competition on Thursday, with several athletes able to punch their tickets to Eugene. Sara Killinen and Rebecca Mammel open the day with their hammer competition, while Rachel Baxter and Julia Fixsen will contest the pole vault in the evening. Essence Henderson wraps up the day's field events with the shot put final at 7 PM. Tech's women's distance runners feature on Thursday, as Leigha Torino and Ava Hassebrock aim to advance in the 1500m, while Hannah Ballowe, Grace Boone, and Barbora Malíková close out the night with the 800m.
