Four Hokies taken in 2022 NFL Draft

LAS VEGAS – For the second year in a row, four Virginia Tech football players were taken in the NFL Draft. The last time at least four Hokies got selected in consecutive drafts was in 1997 and 1998.

The 2022 NFL Draft featured three Tech offensive players and one defensive player being selected.

Tight end James Mitchell was the first off the board, getting selected in the fifth round (No. 177 overall) by the Detroit Lions. He became the fourth Hokie to be selected by the franchise.

Then three Hokies were taken in the sixth round, starting with defensive lineman Amaré Barno (Carolina, No. 189) and then offensive linemen Luke Tenuta (Buffalo, No. 209) and Lecitus Smith (Arizona, No. 215) followed.

The two offensive linemen going in the same draft for Tech marked the first time that's happened since 2006, when both Jimmy Martin (San Diego, No. 227) and Will Montgomery (Carolina, No. 234) went in the seventh round.

Tech has now had a Hokie selected in 28 of the last 29 drafts and Saturday marked the 15th time the Hokies have had four or more players taken in an NFL Draft.

The Hokies have now had 164 players taken in the NFL Draft in their storied history.
