BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech football set some new numbers statistics-wise Saturday against Georgia Tech in its 26-17 victory at Bobby Dodd Stadium. You can view those tidbits below.

STATS WITH SALAS

Have A Day Tré
Junior wide receiver Tré Turner had quite the day Saturday. Here's a list of his accomplishments:

  • Moved to sixth on both the all-time receptions and all-time receiving yards lists
  • His 69-yard touchdown reception was the longest catch of his career
  • The 187 receiving yards was a career-high and his fourth 100-yard receiving game of his career
  • His seven receptions tied his career-high

The last time a Virginia Tech receiver gained 150 yards in a game was Damon Hazelton at ODU in 2018 with 154.

Back-to-Back
Freshman running back Malachi Thomas continues to impress. With his 151 yards rushing against Syracuse and 103 yards against Georgia Tech, he becomes the first true freshman running back to have back-to-back games rushing 100 yards since Kevin Jones had 181 against Virginia and 160 against Miami in 2001.

What's even more impressive is he only has three total yards lost this season on 57 carries.

Other Notes From Saturday

  • Armani Chatman recorded the first interception of his career.
  • Nasir Peoples registered the first fumble recovery of his career.
  • John Parker Romo set career highs in field goal attempts (5) and makes (4) in a game.
  • The Hokies scored two touchdowns in the first quarter for the first time this season.
  • For the second time this season, the Hokies scored 14 or more points in the first half. They had 19 last week against Syracuse.
  • Tayvion Robinson became the 16th Hokie to record 100 career receptions.
  • Nick Gallo's 27-yard reception in the fourth quarter was a career long.
  • Virginia Tech's seven penalties for 61 yards were both season highs.
  • Braxton Burmiester threw for a career-high 254 yards and tied his career-high of two touchdown passes in a game.

Battle of the Techs
The 53 carries were the most by Virginia Tech against a Georgia Tech defense (52 in 2011). The 491 total yards were also the most given up by Georgia Tech in the series (481 in 2007). Tayvion Robinson's 24-yard punt return in the third quarter were the most by a Hokie in the 18-game series. Romo's four made field goals on five attempts where the most makes and attempts by the Hokies in the series.

Looking Ahead To Friday
With the Hokies playing at Boston College on Friday, Tech enters a short week between games for the 81st time. Overall, Tech is 52-25-4 all-time when playing with six days or less between games, 10-8-3 on the road. The first game with less than a week between was all the way back in 1896. After beating Alleghany Institute 20-0 on Tuesday, Oct. 20 at Sheib Field, they traveled to Danville, Va. to face North Carolina on Saturday, Oct. 24 – just four days after the previous game.

Tech is currently 18-2 in short week games going back to 1994. Under Coach Fuente, they're 5-1.

Wondering what the shortest number of days between games is? Believe it or not, it's one and it's happened four times! The most recent was in 1907. Tech played Washington & Lee in Lynchburg on Oct. 19, then faced off against Davidson in Roanoke the next day. Our most common opponent, VMI - 13 times.
