Chester Frazier

Associate Head Coach
Joined Virginia Tech men’s basketball staff: first stint (2019-21), then returned to the program in April 2025. He enters his third season with the program as associate head coach.

With the Hokies: Frazier has had a knack of developing talent in his coaching tenure and that has rung true so far his first two years in Blacksburg, helping Keve Aluma break out for an All-ACC season in 2020-21 and Wabissa Bede owning the sixth-best assist-turnover ratio in the country (3.34) in 2019-20. Frazier, a tremendous scouter, was also fundamental in Tech’s upset wins over then-No. 3 Villanova in 2020-21 and then-No. 3 Michigan State in 2019-20. He was vital in breaking the ACC record for most 3-pointers made in a game with 21 in 2019-20, as well as getting the Hokies to the NCAA tournament in 2021 to extend their streak to a school-record four straight appearances.

Prior to Virginia Tech: Frazier brings more than a decade of coaching experience from the ACC, Big 12 and Big Ten conferences to the Tech men’s basketball program. In his one season in Morgantown as an associate head coach, Frazier and the Mountaineers went 19-13 overall and 10-10 in Big 12 play, narrowly missing out on the NCAA tournament. WVU posted top-25 wins over No. 3 Gonzaga, No. 24 Arizona, No. 7 Kansas and No. 2 Iowa State along the way. Further complementing his strong relationships with players, Frazier helped assemble the No. 23-ranked recruiting class in 2025 for the Mountaineers.

Frazier, an Illinois alumnus, spent three seasons (2021-24) at his alma mater as an assistant coach under Brad Underwood, prior to WVU. The Baltimore, Md., native helped lead the Illini to the NCAA Elite Eight in 2024, an NCAA Second Round appearance in 2022 and an NCAA tournament appearance in 2023. He helped guide Illinois to the Big Ten regular season championship in 2022 and Big Ten tournament championship in 2024. Illinois won 72 games in three seasons with Frazier on staff.

Prior to his first stint at Virginia Tech, Frazier coached for seven seasons at Kansas State under head coach Bruce Weber and played a critical role in one of the best stretches (2012-19) in K-State history, which included 150 wins, two Big 12 regular-season championships (2013 and 2019) and five NCAA tournament appearances (2013, 2014, 2017, 2018, 2019). He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Illinois.

Of Note: Frazier tutored 13 players named to All-Big 12 teams during his time in Manhattan,  and helped mentor the 2019 Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, four Big 12 All-Defensive Team members, as well as three players selected to the league’s All-Newcomer Team.

Awards: Following the 2015-16 season, Frazier was one of just six power conference assistant coaches selected to the 2016 Under Armour 30-under-30 Team presented by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) at the Final Four in Houston. The list honors both head coaches and assistant coaches under the age of 30 across all levels of college basketball.

Playing career: Frazier was a four-year lettermen and two-time captain for the Illinois Fighting Illini from 2005-09, playing all four seasons for Weber. Known for being a hard-nose point guard, he helped Illinois to 89 wins, including three 20-win seasons, and three trips to the NCAA Tournament during his career. He still ranks seventh at Illinois in career assists (484) and ninth in career assists per game (3.9). He earned honorable mention All-Big Ten and Big Ten All-Defensive Team honors, while leading the Big Ten in assists (5.3 per game) his senior season. He went on to play professionally in Germany for Goettingen (2009-10) and then for S. Oliver Baskets Wuerzburg Basketball Club (2011-12).

Education: Illinois, 2009 (B.S. Recreation Management).
