Marc Lewis

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR, S/C, FOOTBALL
Marc Lewis joined the athletics department on a full-time basis in May 2020 to lead the sports science analytics efforts for the football program. Currently, he is pursuing his Ph.D. in exercise physiology within the department of human nutrition, foods, and exercise at Virginia Tech. His research is focused on athlete monitoring and the fatigue and recovery in athletes. He assists Hilgart’s staff in implementing the many aspects of Tech’s in-season and off-season training regimens.

Lewis spent the past year as an applied sports science fellow with Ben Hilgart and Tech’s football strength and conditioning staff. In his role as an applied sports science fellow, he assisted Hilgart’s team in the development and implementation of a comprehensive strength and conditioning program aimed at reducing the likelihood and severity of sport-related injury, while enhancing on-field performance. In addition, he collected and analyzed data pertaining to athlete training load and performance.

Lewis will manage Tech’s comprehensive athlete monitoring program using tools such as GPS tracking, heart rate monitoring, and force plate testing systems, which allow for the collection of data during training and practice. Working in conjunction with Mike Gorforth and Tech’s medical and athletic training staffs, these data are used to monitor return-to-play and athlete training load, while assessing performance.

Prior to his involvement with Tech’s football program, Lewis worked in the department of human nutrition, foods, and exercise at Virginia Tech as a graduate research and teaching assistant. Lewis also volunteered with the women’s basketball program under the direction of senior director for strength and conditioning, Greg Werner.

A United States Army veteran, Lewis served our country as a paratrooper (Airborne Infantryman) and completed deployments to Iraq where he earned a combat infantryman badge and other Army commendations. Prior to his arrival at Tech, Lewis served as a research assistant at Wake Forest University where he completed his undergraduate degree in exercise science. He also served as a personal trainer in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Lewis is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength Conditioning Association and a United States Weightlifting Sports Performance Coach through United States Weightlifting. In addition, Lewis has published peer-reviewed research in the areas of human performance and exercise physiology and has presented at numerous professional conferences.

Lewis resides in Christiansburg with his wife, Nikki, and his dogs Winston and Salem.
