A Talk With... How would you describe last season? For me personally, it was a tough season. I was out the whole year with back surgery. I learned a lot of good lessons. What did you learn? I learned that you have to overcome injury and adversity sometimes. My body is not the healthiest, but I learned how to support my teammates from the sidelines. What was it like winning the ACC Championship? It was a great feeling even though I was not an integral part of it. All the hard work we, as a team, have put in here the last four years. It was a rewarding feeling especially being our first year in the ACC and coming off of a couple of tough seasons. What are your goals for this year? I want to be able to impact the team in the most positive way possible. On defense and on special teams. Wherever they want me line up, I want to be able to help this team be repeat champions. What is your role on the team? I see myself as a leader, especially on special teams since I have been here for four years. I want to be able to lead by example and be a champion. What makes Virginia Tech special teams special? I think, how hard we work on them and how much time we put into them. We use special teams as another opportunity to score. What is your favorite Hokie memory? Being down at Miami when we won the ACC championship and I was celebrating with my teammates. It was such an amazing feeling. What does it mean to be a Hokie? It means everything to me. Coming from California, I really didn't know what it was all about but all I can say is that I am a lifetime Hokie now. It means the world to me to be a part of this family. What made you choose Virginia Tech? I really liked the environment when I came on my recruiting visit. This is a small town with a big time football program and I really liked that. I liked the family environment, and what the coaches had to say. What is something about you that many people don't know? I say 'dude' a lot. Coming from California, I like to surf, skate and snowboard. I like to do all the classic west coast things. What do you listen to before games? I listen to music sometimes; it's not a big deal to me. When I do listen to music, I like Snoop Dog, 50 Cent, Tupac and a little Metallica.

2004: Played in one game, dressing for three ... Had two assisted tackles ... Had back surgery in the preseason and missed the first nine games ... Returned to the practice field before the Maryland game ... Ended up dressing and playing eight snaps on defense, picking up two assisted tackles ... Posted a 350-pound bench in spring testing ...

2003: Played in all 13 games, starting one ... Played 256 defensive plays and 103 on special teams plays during the regular season ... Contributed 30 solo tackles and 18 assists ... Included in those 48 stops were five tackles for loss ... Chipped in two quarterback hurries, a forced interception and a pass broken up ... Registered a career-high eight solo tackles against UConn ... Got his first collegiate start against No. 2 Miami and registered four solo tackles, including two for a loss, six assists and two quarterback hurries ... Was in for 36 snaps at Virginia ... Had five solo tackles and an assist, along with a pass break up and a forced interception ... Moved to defensive end for spring practice ...

2002: Played in 13 games, mostly on special teams ... Recorded 11 solo tackles and eight assists this season ... Also had a quarterback hurry on defense ... Played 26 snaps on defense at Western Michigan, recording three solo stops, two assists and a quarterback hurry ... Turned in a personal-best 350-pound bench press during off-season testing ...

2001: Was redshirted while working at mike linebacker ... Turned in a 400-pound back squat during spring testing ... Was in on five tackles during one of the team's spring scrimmages ... Contributed two tackles in the Maroon-White game ...

High School: Played several positions as a junior for Coach Steve Grady, including defensive tackle, center and offensive tackle ... Turned in 38 tackles, four sacks, and three fumble recoveries on defense that season ... Switched to linebacker as a senior and helped the team to a No. 25 national ranking ... Registered 138 tackles his senior season with four sacks, three fumbles caused and three recoveries ... Had 15 tackles in the CIF Division I title game versus No. 2 ranked Long Beach Poly ... Named the California Del Rey League, CIF Division I Defensive Player of the Year ... Was selected first-team all-league, all-division and all-region ...
