Hokie ClubChase Lummus enters his first season (2026) on the Virginia Tech baseball coaching staff, having been hired into the role of director of pitching performance, baseball analytics in July 2025. He joined the Hokies after spending the previous six seasons within the Texas baseball program, highlighted by his five seasons as a left-handed pitcher for the Longhorns (2020-24) and his elevation to bullpen coach for the 2025 campaign.
Lummus was lauded by Virginia Tech head coach John Szefc for his proficiency in evaluating pitchers through pitch model grading and his detailed approach to advanced scouting. His father, Mark, has been a longtime national cross-checking scout for the Seattle Mariners (now special assignment pitching scout).

Upon reaching the end of his student-athlete career, Lummus remained at Texas into the summer of 2024, transitioning into the role of the Longhorns’ bullpen coach. Under the leadership of Texas head coach Jim Schlossnagle and pitching coach Max Weiner, Lummus assisted in the daily mentorship of the Longhorns’ pitchers, building mound confidence while fostering a supportive team environment.
Behind the scenes, Lummus specialized in analyzing performance data at Texas to best outline individual- and team-based improvement goals. His infusion of advanced scouting metrics helped shape the Longhorns’ daily practice plans and throwing schedules while his application of pitch model evaluations led to tailored developmental work with each student-athlete.
With contributions from Lummus, Texas achieved a 44-14 record during the 2025 season and routinely held a consensus No. 1 national ranking, hosting the NCAA Austin Regional as the country’s No. 2 national seed. On the mound, the Longhorns ranked second among NCAA Division I programs in both hits allowed per nine innings (7.13) and WHIP (1.18) while placing sixth in ERA (3.71).
As a student-athlete, Lummus arrived at Texas ahead of the 2020 season, though was sidelined during the fall of his sophomore year by Tommy John surgery. After completing his year-plus recovery, he made his collegiate debut with the Longhorns in February 2023, logging two scoreless innings against No. 10 Vanderbilt at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.
Lummus made 11 appearances and sported a 5.17 ERA during his 2023, redshirt-junior season at Texas, earning a roster spot that summer with the Orleans Firebirds of the Cape Cod Baseball League. He closed out his collegiate career the following spring by making 15 appearances and two starts, toeing a 4.09 ERA with a 2-0 record spanning 22 innings pitched.
Including his 2025 season on staff, Lummus helped Texas post a six-year performance record of 233-102 (.696 winning percentage) with five (of five possible) NCAA tournament berths, three Super Regional appearances and two trips to the Men’s College World Series.
Lummus – a native of Godley, Texas – graduated from Texas in 2023 with his bachelor’s degree in communications.
