Multiple sports use the space inside of Rector Field House, but none more so than the Virginia Tech track and field programs.
The men’s and women’s track and field teams hold their home meets during the indoor season inside of Rector, which serves as the winter home for the track program. This track consistently rates as one of the fastest tracks in the country, in large part to the 200-meter, Mondo-surfaced, banked track.
Construction first began on Rector Field House in 1971, with the facility then finishing with a size of 71,189 square feet. In 2018, Rector finished an 18-million-dollar renovation as it to continues to be a staple for the highly successful Virginia Tech track & field.
With the addition of the new North wing, Rector created increased storage for track along with other further enhancements such as a new roof, new lighting and a new surface for the track. Altogether, the enhancements to Rector added approximately 32,000 square feet to the structure.
There have been several areas of improvement. The largest and most notable upgrade is an indoor throws area. The addition features two throws areas, one for the weight throw and one for the shot put. The addition connects to the main area and will be used for both practice and competition.
“The renovation of Rector Field House provides our program with an outstanding, updated facility that will enhance the recruitment and training of our student-athletes as well as create great environment for our home competitions,” Dave Cianelli, Director of Track & Field at Virginia Tech said. “The commitment to this project by [Director of Athletic] Whit Babcock demonstrates that our administration not only expects our program to be competitive nationally, but is willing to give us a first class facility to support those efforts.”
Rector Field House has served as the host to several of the East Coast's top invitationals, attracting many of the nation’s best teams. Rector has served as the home of the ACC Indoor Championships five times, including three straight years from 2009-2011 and most recently in 2019. Combined with the Johnson-Miller Track Complex adjacent to it, Rector Field House gives Tech two of the finest track complexes in the country.
On September 18, 2024, the Rector Field House indoor track was renamed to the Dave & Ellen Cianelli Track following the illustrious career of legendary former Director of Track & Field and Cross Country, Dave Cianelli.
In August of 2024, it was annouced that the 20-time ACC Coach of the Year and 19-time USTFCCCA Southeast Region Coach of the Year, Dave Cianelli, would be inducted into the USFTCCCA Hall of Fame and in September of 2024 he was inducted to the Virginia Tech Athletics Hall of Fame. His retirement in July of 2024 followed a storied career. Cianelli's legacy as one of the sport's most influential coaches is marked by his 74 NCAA Champions, 507 All-America honorees, 204 All-Americans, 390 individual conference champions, 32 World Championship qualifiers, and 22 Olympic qualifiers. At Tech alone, Cianelli has overseen the success of 20 NCAA individual champions, 13 top-10 team finishes at the NCAA Championships, 261 ACC individual champions, and 22 ACC team titles.
