Hokies take 10th at NCAAs

The Hokie men take 10th place overall at NCAA Championships, breaking three school records and taking home four top-eight finishes.

FEDERAL WAY, Wash.- The men’s squad closed out the season with a 10th place finish at NCAAs, highlighted by Carles Coll Marti’s third-place finish in the 200 breaststroke, Youssef Ramadan’s eighth-place finish in the 100 butterfly and three broken school records. 

 

Coll Marti capped off his collegiate career with a podium finish in the 200 breaststroke, where he swam a 1:48.89 that set the ACC and Virginia Tech record. His impressive performances throughout the week earned him fourth place and a new school record in the 200 IM (1:39.52) and 13th place in the 100 breaststroke. He leaves Federal Way a three-time First Team All-American and three-time Honorable Mention All-American. 

Ramadan also closed out his collegiate career with a podium finish in the 100 fly. The fifth-year swam a 44.15 and earned First Team All-America honors. For his 10th place finish in the 100 back (44.72) and 12th place finish in the 100 free (41.53), he earned Honorable Mention All-America. 

Brendan Whitfield had an impressive showing at his second NCAA Championships, earning Honorable Mention All-America in the 100 free (41.69) with a 15th-place finish. The sophomore also competed in the 50 free prelims, where he took 18th place (18.98). 

Mario Molla Yanes appeared in the 100 fly (44.97), 100 back (46.17) and 200 back (1:39.80) taking 17th, 29th and 21st respectively. His 200 back time was a personal best and elevated him to the third-best time in program history. 

Senior Luis Dominguez competed in the 100 free (42.73) and 200 free (1:33.84) for the Hokies, where he placed 55th and 38th respectively. 

Landon Gentry made his debut appearance at the NCAA Championships, appearing in the 50 free (19.65), 100 fly (45.15) and 200 fly (1:40.99). Gentry swam personal bests in the 100 fly and the 200 fly, and moved up to fifth in the program’s record book in the 100 fly. 

William Hayon tied his personal best time in the 50 free, where he logged a 19.52 in prelims and took 49th place. In the 100 fly, he posted a 45.33 good for 28th place and a 42.81 in the 100 free for 58th place. 

Dominguez, Whitfield, Coll Marti and Molla Yanes represented the Hokies in the 800 free relay and logged a time of 6:11.96, good for 14th place. The time was a 3.59-second improvement over the time swam at ACC Championships, and earned the squad Honorable Mention All-America honors.  

The 400 medley relay was swum by Ramadan, Coll Marti, Molla Yanes and Whitfield, and earned Honorable Mention All-America honors with their 11th-place finish (3:01.81). The squad also logged a new school record with that time. 

Ramadan, Whitfield, Molla Yanes and Dominguez competed in the 200 free relay for the Hokies. The squad posted a time of 1:15.71, which earned them 13th place and Honorable Mention All-America honors.

The last event of the week was the 400 free relay, where Ramadan, Whitfield, Coll Marti and Molla Yanes earned the Hokies First Team All-America honors with an eighth-place finish (2:46.21).
