CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- The 19th-ranked Hokie men easily defeated the 17th-ranked Cavaliers 198-102. The women faced a difficult matchup against the No. 1 Cavaliers, falling 85-215.
On the men’s side, Carles Coll Marti broke the school record in the 100 breast with his time of 50.78 – a new pool record and the best time in the ACC so far this season. The 50.78 also ties the ACC record.
Hokie Men:
The Hokie men upset the No. 17 Cavaliers, sweeping multiple podiums and breaking AFC pool records.
Youssef Ramadan, Coll Marti, Mario Molla Yanes and Brendan Whitfield set the 200 medley relay pool record in their opening race, swimming a 1:22.93 – good for the fifth-fastest in the program’s record book.
Lee Naber took second in the 1000 free, putting up a 9:05.22 and moving up to sixth in the record books. Luis Dominguez swam a 4:22.27 in the 500 free, which was good for first place. Naber followed him in third with a 4:27.04.
Dominguez posted a 1:33.61 200 free, good for first place. Jakub Poliacik followed him in third with a 1:35.56. Whitfield took first in the 50 free (19.29) and 100 free (42.67) and William Hayon placed second with a 43.42.
Ramadan left his mark on the AFC, setting the pool record to 45.07 in the 100 back. He also earned first place in the 100 fly, setting another pool record with his 44.97.
Molla Yanes’ 46.51 in the 100 back earned him third and the seventh-fastest time in the program’s record book. He followed it up with a first-place finish in the 200 back, good for a new pool record and fifth-best in the program.
Coll Marti excelled in the 100 breast, swimming a 50.78 to set the Virginia Tech school record, break the pool record, tie the standing ACC record and set the fastest time in the ACC this season. He also broke pool records in the 200 breast (1:51.03) and the 200 IM (1:42.61).
It was a Hokie podium in the 200 breast as Joseph Hong took second (1:58.57) and Ethan Maloney placed third (1:59.10).
Landon Gentry earned second place in the 200 fly, posting a 1:45.74. Nico Garcia Saiz took second in the 200 back with a 1:42.77.
Ramadan, Whitfield, Molla Yanes and Dominguez closed out the day with a first-place finish in the 400 free relay, posting a 2:50.61.
On the boards, Nathan Cox earned first place on 1m (359.25), followed by Rocky Ramsland in second (320.55). On 3m, the Hokies swept the podium with Cox taking first (371.10), Ramsland taking second (337.05) and Jacob Fisher earning third place (335.70).
Hokie Women:
The A-team relay squad of Carmen Weiler Sastre, Emily Santos, Christine Datovech and Emily Claesson started the day with a third-place finish in the 200 medley relay (1:38.94).
Kate Anderson proved successful in the distance free races, taking second in the 1000 free (9:47.22) and third in the 500 free (4:47.89). Her 1000 free time elevated her to the fourth fastest in program history.
The podium was just out of reach for Emily Claesson, who took fourth place in the 50 free (22.82), 100 free (49.19) and in the 200 free (1:47.01).
Weiler Sastre earned first place in the 100 back with her 51.89, good for the third best time in program history. She took second in the 200 back (1:53.75) and was followed up by Atkinson in third with a 1:55.75.
Santos swam a 1:01.57, good for third place in the 100 breast. Her 2:12.88 in the 200 breast placed her as the fifth fastest in the record book.
Athena Meneses Kovacs placed fourth in the 100 fly, recording a 53.29. Nichelly Lysy posted a 2:03.04 in the 200 IM, securing fourth place.
Weiler Sastre, Claesson, Anna Summers and Meneses Kovacs ended on a high note with a first-place finish in the 400 free relay (3:16.71).
On the boards, Miah Fisher scored a 261.30 on 1m, placing third. On 3m, Peyton Guziec took second place (279.75) and Fisher took third place (279.60).
