Hokies shatter records and NCAA top marks at Hokie Invite

BLACKSBURG – Saturday – Hokies track and field squads continued their success from Friday into Saturday's action at the Hokie Invitational, breaking another school record and earning four more event wins.

Kicking off the action on Saturday morning were the Hokies' heptathletes, led by Jake Spotswood. In his debut for Tech, the Alabama transfer set PRs in three of the competition's six events en route to the win with a school record total of 5,731. Spotswood's point total breaks the previous Virginia Tech record by 381 points and stands as the No. 1 heptathlon in the NCAA and No. 2 in the world so far this season.

Adding a 200m win to his 60m on Friday was Cole Beck, who crossed the line with a time of 21.06, the fastest Beck has gone indoors aside from his PR of 21.01. Beck's time ranks as the top 200m so far this year in the ACC.

Following Beck were three other Hokies as Tech swept the top four in the 200m: Kennedy Harrison (2nd, 21.20), Kahleje "KJ" Tillmon (3rd, 21.22), and Torrence Walker (4th, 21.49). All three behind Beck secured personal bests in the 200m for a strong start to the season by the Hokies' sprints group.

In the men's seeded pole vault, Conner McClure and Harrison Rice showed composure and talent to finish as the No. 1 and No. 2 collegians in the field. Both cleared 5.20m (17' 0.75") with McClure taking the win on fewer attempts. The two now share the top clearance this season in the ACC, with the freshman McClure setting a new lifetime best and Rice earning his best mark since February of 2021.

In the throws area, Fiona Richards earned a third-place finish in the shot put with her best mark of 16.09m (52' 9.5"). Richards' result marks the first time since she's been with Virginia Tech that she delivered 16-meter throws in back-to-back meets, following her PR of 16.35m (53' 7.75") at the Virginia Tech Invitational.

Closing out the action on Saturday was a thrilling 4x400m relay, as the A team of Kahleje "KJ" Tillmon, Kennedy Harrison, Patrick Forrest, and Tyreke Sapp won the event with a time of 3:09.41. Their relay ranks as the top time in the ACC this year and takes the No. 4 spot in the Hokies' all-time lists.

Following this weekend's fireworks, parts of the Virginia Tech track and field squads will rest next weekend, with the pole vault group and other individual entrants traveling to Lexington, Va. to compete in the VMI Winter Relays Jan. 28-29.Gallery: (1-22-2022) T&F: 2022 Hokie Invite Day 2

Friday – Tech track and field exploded for two school records, seven event wins and tons of personal bests on an electric Friday at the Hokie Invitational.

In an action-packed men's 1,000m, Seb Anthony took the win with a school record time of 2:20.07, breaking the previous record of 2:20.54 set by Neil Gourley in 2017. Anthony's winning time now ranks as the fastest in the NCAA this year and second fastest in the world.

Finishing second to Anthony was fellow European star Antonio Lopez Segura, who ran the thousand meters in 2:20.73. Lopez Segura follows right behind his teammate and ranks second fastest in the NCAA and fourth in the world.

The second school record to fall on Friday was the women's triple jump mark, broken by Victoria Gorlova with a leap of 13.18m (43' 3"). A transfer from Kansas making her Hokies debut, Gorlova fouled on her first jump before going 13.06m (42' 10.25"), meaning her first legal attempt with Virginia Tech took down the school record. Gorlova's jump is the seventh best in the NCAA and top of the ACC as of Friday morning's performance lists.

Senior sprinter Cole Beck continued his strong start to the 2022 season on Friday, setting a new personal best in the 60m dash. Beck crossed the line in 6.63 seconds, finishing first among collegiate athletes.

In the women's 600m, freshman Barbora Malíková raced to a victory in 1:28.02. Malíková's debut for the Hokies comes following her time at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics with the Czech Republic, and her 600m time came in at first in the NCAA, third in the world, and second all-time at Virginia Tech.

Star pole vaulter Rachel Baxter won yet another pole vault competition Friday afternoon, finishing first with a clearance of 4.42m (14' 6"). Baxter's series up to that point featured only one foul, followed by four consecutive successful vaults en route to the second-best mark in the NCAA this season.

Following their exceptional season opener last weekend, Rebecca Mammel and Sara Killinen continued their weight throw dominance. Mammel took the win with a best throw of 21.72m (71' 3.25"), and Killinen set a PR for the second meet in a row with her second-place effort of 21.35m (70' 0.5").

Closing the night out for Tech was Chauncey Chambers, who took the win in the men's triple jump with an indoor PR-tying leap of 15.92m (52' 2.75"). Chambers' jump gives him the fifth best mark in the NCAA so far this season.

Ahead of all the action, the Hokies' multi athletes competed in the heptathlon and pentathlon, with the heptathlon resuming Saturday morning. With three events remaining, Sean Murphy sits in second place with 3,116 points and Jake Spotswood is in third with 3,093 points.

Action resumes first in men's unseeded pole vault at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, followed by the heptathlon at 9:45 a.m. Running events kick off on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. with the women's distance medley relay.Gallery: (1-21-2022) T&F: 2022 Hokie Invite Day 1
