Tournament Notes

  • Virginia Tech is one of 18 teams competing at the invitational tournament at the Naval Academy.
  • At No. 4, Tech is the highest-ranked competitor of the field. No. 22 Lock Haven is the only other ranked team participating, but there are four teams competing that received votes in the latest NWCA poll.
  • The 141-pound weight class is the most competitive of the tournament on paper. Six of the top-20 141-pound wrestlers could be participating including Hokies' Mitch Moore, who is currently 18th in the country. (Rankings by InterMat)
  • Hokies' Brent Moore and Caden Darber are scheduled to compete at 149 pounds, which is the most wide-open bracket with only one ranked wrestler in the field. Moore pinned No. 8 Sammy Sasso in Tech's win over Ohio State on Sunday, which earned him ACC Co-Wrestler of the Week honors.

Other Notes

  • Virginia Tech moved up seven spots in the latest NWCA poll to No. 4 in the country. The Hokies were the biggest movers in the poll after upsetting No. 3 Ohio State in Columbus this past Sunday.
  • Brent Moore was named ACC Co-Wrestler of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday. Moore was a crucial part of the upset victory over the Buckeyes with a pin of eighth-ranked Sammy Sasso.
  • Mekhi Lewis and head coach Tony Robie will be joining other 2019 national champions and their coaches at the White House Friday morning. Lewis was invited as part of NCAA Champions Day.
  • The Hokies will return to Cassell Coliseum on Dec. 21 to face off with Chattanooga. The dual is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
