Tech wraps up season with conclusion of NCAA Outdoor Championships

Final Results

AUSTIN – On the final day of the NCAA Outdoor Championships, the Virginia Tech women's track and field team saw Eszter Bajnok compete in the triple jump at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

It was a bitter sweet ending to the season for Bajnok. The Hokies all-time leader in the long and triple jump, was unable to find rhythm on the day as she fouled on all three of her attempts in the triple jump. Though not the finish she may have wanted, Bajnok had a fantastic season as she reset school records in the long jump (6.24 meters; 20 feet, 5.75 inches) and triple jump (13.66 meters; 44 feet, 9.75 inches), which also broke the Under-23 Hungarian triple jump record.

"It certainly wasn't the way we wanted to end the season, but Eszter has an outstanding year," Tech jumps coach Paul Zalewski said. "She broke both indoor and outdoor long and triple jump records. She set a new outdoor lifetime best and broke the Hungarian U23 record in the triple. It was her best season yet. We are down, but certainly not out. She will be back with a vengeance."

Seufer ran a tactical race in the men's 5,000 meters. The redshirt junior stayed towards the back of the pack for a majority of the race and began to make his move in final 800 meters. Unfortunately, Seufer was unable to close the gap between himself and the leaders as he claimed second-team All-America honors with his 12th place finish in a time of 14 minutes, 13.91 seconds.

The next event of the day was the 1,500-meter run prelims featuring Pocratsky and Edwards. Pocratsky competed in the first section and got off to a quick start which saw her in the lead for a large portion of the race, but in the final 200 meters she was unable to find another gear, which saw her finishing 14th overall with a season best time of 4 minutes, 15.72 seconds. Edwards also was in position to qualify in her race in the second section, but was unable to close the distance in the final 100 meters to advance to Saturday's finals as she finished with a time of 4:18.04. AUSTIN – On day 1 of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, the Virginia Tech men's track and field team produced three All-Americans at the University of Texas' Mike A. Myers Stadium on Wednesday evening.

In his final collegiate meet, Deakin Volz vaulted 5.50 meters (18 feet, 0.5 inches) to finish tied for 11th, a result that gave the senior second-team All-America honors. Volz wrapped up his career at Tech as a six-time All-American and a three-time ACC champion.

Fitsum Seyoum got off to strong start in his first NCAA Outdoor Championships, as he was within the top five for a majority of the 3,000-meter steeplechase. But he was unable to keep his position to qualify for Friday's finals, as he finished with a time of 9 minutes, 10.96 seconds in the event.

In the 800-meter run, sophomore Bashir Mosavel-Lo just missed out on advancing to the finals, as he finished third in his heat and 12th overall with a time of 1:49.00. Still, he earned second-team All-America honors.

Miles Green, the ACC champion in the 400-meter hurdles, wrapped up his stellar freshman season by finishing third in his heat and earning second-team All-America honors.

In his first season at Tech and at the first NCAA Outdoor Championships of his career, junior Isaiah Rogers tossed a mark of 18.28 meters (59 feet, 11.75 inches) in the shot put.

"Unfortunately, not the day we were hoping for," Tech throws coach Andrew Dubs said. "He did a nice job of composing himself during the third round after two fouls in the first two rounds. Just came up a little short.

"Overall, though, just an outstanding season by Isaiah. He showed tremendous competitive fortitude, was an incredible teammate, and he was a great leader.  His progress and improvement is a true testament to his work ethic and dedication. He has a bright future here at Virginia Tech and beyond."
