Tech pushes 3 into quarterfinals at the NCAA Wrestling Championships

Session II Brackets

PITTSBURGH – Virginia Tech will have three quarterfinalists and five wrestlers in the consolation bracket tomorrow for the second day of the of the 2019 NCAA Championships in PPG Paints Arena.
 
Redshirt freshman Mekhi Lewis (165 pounds), redshirt senior Zack Zavatsky (184) and redshirt senior Tom Sleigh (197) look to clinch All-American status tomorrow morning with wins in the quarters. Redshirt junior Korbin Myers (133), freshman Mitch Moore (141), redshirt senior Ryan Blees (149), redshirt sophomore B.C. LaPrade (157) and redshirt junior David McFadden (174) are all still alive on the backside of the bracket.
 
The Hokies are currently tied with Nebraska for eighth place in the team race with 16.0 points. Action gets underway tomorrow at 11 a.m. Session III will be broadcast on ESPNU and the WatchESPN platforms.

SESSION II NOTES

  • Lewis worked a 4-1 decision over Army's Cael McCormick en route to the quarterfinals, where he'll face top-seeded Alex Marinelli of Iowa tomorrow morning.
  • Sleigh held on to a 9-8 decision by knocking off seventh-seeded Jay Aiello of UVA to clinch his first-career appearance in the round of eight.
  • Zavatsky advanced to the round of eight for the second-consecutive season with a 9-7 decision over Michigan State's Cameron Caffey.
  • On the back side, both Mitch Moore and B.C. LaPrade earned bonus point victories; Moore with a win by fall and LaPrade with a major decision.
  • Moore's pin was his 10th of the season, a total that's tied for the 10th most pins in a single season.  
  • After registering one the biggest upsets of session one, Blees nearly turned in another win over a higher seed but he dropped a 4-2 decision to 10th-seeded Pat Lugo in sudden victory.
  • The Hokies also had a close defeat at 174 pounds, where David McFadden was called for hands to the face that tied the match up at 3-3 with 11 seconds left. Army's Ben Harvey then secured a takedown in sudden victory after a lengthy scramble that clinched a 5-3 decision in sudden victory.
  • Billy Miller ends his career as a four-time NCAA qualifier with 95 career wins, two EWL championships and a third-place finish at this year's ACC Championship.
