Tech finishes strong on day two of Virginia Tech Elite Meet, Camel City Invitational

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech track and field teams wrapped up day two of the Virginia Tech Elite Meet and Camel City Invitational with multiple Hokies setting new personal and season bests.  
 
Deakin Volz continued his already strong season for the Hokies. The senior cleared a season high 5.55 meters (18 feet, 2.5 inches) to finish second overall and first among college athletes in the pole vault.
 
In his first serious action of the season, junior Peter Seufer ran 7 minutes, 59.90 seconds in the 3,000 at the Camel City Invitational. That time reset his previous best of 8:04.63 and moved him to third all-time in the record book.
 
Senior Rachel Pocratsky and junior Sarah Edwards finished with identical times of 4:36.49 to finish second and third in the mile, respectively. Edwards also set a new personal best and ran the third-fastest mile in school history.

Distance
Sara Freix finished seventh overall in the unseeded 3,000 with her time of 9:21.72. That is the seventh-fastest time a Hokie has ever run in the event.
 
Bashir Mosavel-Lo ran the seventh fastest 800 in school history with his time of 1:49.46 and finished fifth overall in the event.
 
Diego Zarate Finished second overall in the mile with his time of 4:03.43
 
Pole Vault
Sophomore Rachel Baxter cleared 4.33 meters (14 feet, 2.25 inches) to finish second overall and first among college athletes in the pole vault.
 
Freshman Harrison Rice and sophomore Jaelyn Demory both cleared 4.90 meters (16 feet, 0.75 inches) to finish tied for fifth place. Rice also set a new personal best with his mark.
 
Sprints
Michael Davenport earned his second event title of the season his time of 21.64 in the 200.
 
Sophomore Kennedy Dennis finished second overall in the 200 with her time of 23.94, while freshman Nykah Smith finished fourth and set a new PR with her time of 24.25.
 
The 4x400 women's relay team of Arlicia Bush, Dennis, Imagine Patterson and Smith ran a time of 3:38.12 to earn a first-place finish. The men's relay team of Miles Green, Davenport, Eldon Phillips and Hans Gallagher finished second overall with their time of 3:14.70.
 
Throws
Isaiah Rogers threw a season best in the shot put with his mark of 17.52 meters (57 feet, 5.75 inches) to finish third in the event. Sean Murphy finished sixth and set a new personal best with his throw of 12.12 meters (39 feet, 9.25 inches)  
 
Jumps
Freshman Chauncey Chambers leaped 15.08 meters (49 feet, 5.75 inches) to finish fourth overall and second among college athletes.

UP NEXT
Tech splits up, as the distance runners head to the Iowa State Classic, while select student-athletes head to Clemson for the Tiger Paw Invitational. The Hokies will return home the following week, as they play host the Virginia Tech Challenge meet on Feb 15-16.

Day 1 (Virginia Tech Elite Meet, Camel City Invitational)

BLACKSBURG – A record-breaking performance by Jacory Patterson and first-place finishes by Kennedy Dennis, Osman Humeida, Thierry Siewe Yanga, Ben Fleming and Shannon Quinn highlighted day one of the Virginia Tech "Doc Hale" Elite Meet and the Camel City Invitational held at Rector Field House and in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, respectively.
 
After breaking the indoor school record in the 300-meter race at the Virginia Tech Invitational and then breaking the school record in the 200 at the Bob Pollock Invitational, Patterson broke his third school record with his time of 46.14 seconds in the 400. His new school record was more than eight-tenths of a second faster than the time of previous record holder Greg Chiles (46.98). The freshman now has the third-fastest time in the nation and the fastest time in the ACC.
 
Dennis had another solid performance for the Hokies, as she ran 7.36 in the preliminaries of the 60 to advance to the finals. She went on to run 7.36 again to earn a first-place finish and her fourth event title of the season.
 
The distance runners who competed at the Elite meet had a strong showing for the Hokies. Quinn won her first event title of the indoor season, as she set a new personal best in the 800 with her time of 2 minutes, 8.01 seconds. Siewe Yanga also earned a first-place finish and set a new PR in the 800 with his time of 1:52.28.
 
Humeida was one of the select distance runners who made the trip to Winston-Salem for the Camel City Invitational, and he did not disappoint. The sophomore won an event title in his first collegiate 5,000 with a time of 14:44.48.

Ben Fleming also had great showing at the Camel City Invitational. The Blacksburg, Virginia native won his first event title of the season, taking the crown in the 3,000 with a time of  8:15.78.

SPRINTS
Freshman Cole Beck finished third in the 60 with a time of 6.81, while freshman Miles Green finished sixth in the 400 with a time of 48.89.
 
Imagine Patterson had her best showing of the season in the 60 hurdles. The Rock Hill, South Carolina native set a new personal best with her time of 8.54 to finish second in the event and move to ninth all time in the record book.
 
Nykah Smith and Arlicia Bush both ran a time of 54.82 in the 400 to finish sixth and seventh, respectively.
 
THROWS
Isaiah Rogers set a new personal best in the weight throw with his mark of 20.34 meters (66 feet, 8.75 inches) to finish third in the event.
 
Pavla Kuklova placed fourth and set a new personal best in the weight throw with her mark of 18.95 meters (62 feet, 2.25 inches), while Emma Thor placed sixth in the weight with her throw of 18.44 meters (60 feet, 6 inches).
 
DISTANCE
Cate Stone ran a time of 2:16.19 to finish third in the 800 on the women's side at the Elite Meet. On the men's side, freshman Eldon Phillips finished second in the 800 with his time of 1:52.32, while junior Owen Buck came in fourth with a time of 1:52.69.  
 
At the Camel City Invitational, Emily Schiesl set a new PR in the 5,000 with her time of 17:50.30 to finish fourth overall in the event. Ellie Brush had a seventh-place finish and set a new personal best in the 3,000 with her time of 10:00.37, while Lauren Berman finished right behind her with her time of 10:03.04 to come in eighth.
 
Will Griffen came in third place in the 5,000 with his time of 14:49.90, while Jack Joyce earned a third-place finish in the 3,000 with his time of 8:17.41.
 
UP NEXT
Both Tech squads return to the track Saturday, which marks the final day of the Virginia Tech "Doc Hale" Elite Meet and the Camel City Invitational. The Elite Meet starts at 11 a.m. with the women's pole vault, while the first Hokie sees action in the 3,000 at the Camel City Invitational at 2:05 p.m.
