No. 9 Cornell downs No. 14 Hokies on criteria, 17-16

BLACKSBURG – Despite both teams winning five bouts each, ninth-ranked Cornell came out with a 17-16 win over No. 14 Virginia Tech on criteria in front of 1,985 fans in Cassell Coliseum.
 
The Big Red (12-2) won on criteria 3.15.3, total match points scored only from decisions, major decisions and technical falls, by a score of 65-54. The Hokies fall to 8-4 on the season with the loss. After NC State's 20-14 win over North Carolina this evening, Tech is still in contention to share the ACC Dual Meet Championship.
 
The Hokies return to action tomorrow at the Moss Arts Center against No. 22 Virginia at 7 p.m. where there a limited number of walk-up tickets still available. Virginia Tech students get in for free and the first 20 students will receive a free This Is Home t-shirt.

MATCH NOTES

  • Cornell now leads the all-time series, 4-0.
  • The last match decided on criteria in Cassell Coliseum was the Hokies' 19-18 win over Ohio State on Nov. 23, 2014.
  • Redshirt junior Brooks Wilding started at 197 pounds for the Hokies, his first career start.
  • Trailing 3-2 in the third period at heavyweight, Billy Miller used a spin move to get to a low single and converted for two to go ahead 4-3 in the match. Miller eventually rode out the period to get Tech on board.
  • Mitch Moore fought hard against defending national champion Yianni Diakomihalis, holding the undefeated 18-0 sophomore to only his third win by decision this season.
  • Ryan Blees scored three takedowns in a 9-6 win over Jonathan Furnas that started a streak of four-straight wins for the Hokies.
  • B.C. LaPrade scored eight points in the first period that helped lead him to a 10-5 decision at 157.
  • Mekhi Lewis' 14-5 major decision was his seventh major of the season and his 11th bonus point victory.
