BLACKSBURG – The seventh-ranked Missouri Tigers won seven of the 10 bouts against No. 10 Virginia Tech on Friday night as the Tigers got by the Hokies, 21-8, at the Hearnes Center in Columbia, Mo.
Competing without two-time All-American David McFadden, who was wrestling for the United States at the U23 World Championships in Romania this weekend, the Hokies (0-1) couldn't win its first-ever match against the Tigers (3-0) in the all-time series. The Tigers have now won 23 consecutive duals going back to the 2016-17 season.
MATCH NOTES
- Redshirt sophomore B.C. LaPrade got Tech on the scoreboard at 157 pounds with a 9-3 decision in sudden victory overtime. It was 3-3 at the end of the regulation against Mizzou's Jarrett Jacques with LaPrade having a stall and a hands-to-the-face call against him. In the overtime period, LaPrade dug deep and scored a takedown with under a minute left and tacked on four near fall points that made the final score 9-3.
- Two hands-to-the-face calls on redshirt freshman Mekhi Lewis at the very start of the first period proved to be the difference in a match that ended in an 8-6 decision for 15th-ranked Connor Flynn. With a team point deduction, that made the match score 15-2 in favor of the Tigers.
- Wrestling in place of McFadden was redshirt junior Cody Hughes, who performed admirably against No. 4 Daniel Lewis. Hughes scored a takedown on Lewis in the second period.
- Despite allowing a late takedown in the third period that pushed that put bonus points out of reach, redshirt senior Zack Zavatsky racked up over two minutes of riding time against Dylan Wisman that propelled him to an 8-5 decision.
- Redshirt senior Tom Sleigh registered his first win in a Virginia Tech singlet with a 4-3 decision over Wyatt Koelling. It was Sleigh's 90th career victory.
Tech will now turn its attention to No. 25 Northwestern as the Hokies take on the Wildcats on Sunday at 3 p.m. EST in Evanston, Ill. The match will be streamed live on FloWrestling.com.
