BLACKSBURG - In its first exhibition game of the 2018 fall season, the Virginia Tech baseball team saw a number of its newcomers lead the offensive attack, however the visiting High Point Panthers registered the 17-7 win over the Hokies Friday night at English Field at Union Park.
Junior-transfers led the Hokies at the plate as Kerry Carpenter registered a team-high three hits and scored once, while Tanner Thomas and Dalton Harum each had a hit and crossed the plate twice. Carpenter and Dalton also each had a double in the contest, while Reagan Teegarden had a hit and an RBI.
Freshmen who had solid evenings were Carson Taylor, with two hits, including a double, an RBI and a run scored; Nick Biddison, who had two hits and an RBI, and Matt Ballance, who added a hit and an RBI.
On the mound, none of Tech's 10 pitchers tossed more than two innings, with Connor Yoder and Dillon Larsen were the only ones who did not allow an earned run. Peyton Alford struck out a game-high three batters, while Chris Gerard, Ian Seymour, Yoder and Larsen each struck out a pair.
Tech will be back at English Field at Union Park for its final exhibition game on Wednesday night as the Hokies face Walters State with first pitch scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
