Tech defeats Florence-Darlington in exhibition game

BLACKSBURG – Behind a strong pitching effort from the Virginia Tech staff and a solid game at the plate for Kerry Carpenter, the Hokies defeated the visiting Florence-Darlington Tech College Stingers by a score of 13-6 in an exhibition game at English Field at Union Park Wednesday afternoon.

Scheduled to play a total of 12 innings, the Tech pitchers limited FDTC to just two hits over the first 11 frames while striking out 14 batters. Ian Seymour and Chris Gerard each tossed two scoreless frames with three strikeouts to lead the efforts on the mound.

Connor Yoder (2.0 innings), Luke Scherzer (1.0) and Jaison Heard (1.0) each struck out two batters while Peyton Alford (1.2) and Zach Brzykcy (1.1) each struck out one as none of them allowed a run as well.

At the plate, Carpenter led the Hokies with a four-hit game, which included a pair of doubles, knocked in three runs and also scored twice. His two-out, two-RBI double highlighted a four-run fourth inning. He also singled home a run in the fifth that made it an 8-0 contest.

Luke Horanski had three hits in the game and crossed the plate twice. He led off the second inning with a double and scored two batters later on a balk to give Tech a 1-0 lead. Dalton Harum, who notched the only other multi-hit game for the Hokies, followed with a solo home run, making it 2-0.

Nick Biddison led the Hokies with three runs, while Reagan Teegarden scored twice. Nick Holesa added a double, one of the five extra-base hits for Tech.

FDTC finally got on the board in the final inning, with Michael Elijah and Alex Stennett each knocking in a pair for the visitors.

Tech will conclude its fall season with Game 3 of the 2018 Maroon & Orange World Series on Thursday with first pitch slated for 3:30 p.m. Despite wins by Maroon in the first two games, run differential will determine the series winner, and the current score is Maroon 6, Orange 4.
