Relay teams lead Hokies on final day of Virginia Tech Challenge

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech track & field team wrapped up the Virginia Tech Challenge with four top-two finishes by the Hokies relay teams on Saturday afternoon in Rector Fieldhouse.

The women’s distance medley relay resulted in 1-2 finishes by the Hokies. Katie Kennedy, Rachel Pocratsky, Shannon Quinn, and Jennifer Fleming clinched the event while Tessa Riley, Hanna Green, Shannon Morton, and Lauren Berman placed second.

The men’s team followed suit with a 9:54.90 second place finish by Ashkan Mohammadi, Juan Campos, Vincent Ciattei, and Andrew Goldman. The Hokies’ 4x800-meter relay posted a 7:35.37 time to also finish second.

In the 400-meter dash, five Hokies recorded personal best with an additional running a season best time. Courtney Blanden won section two, placing fourth overall in 55.56. Kacia Vines and Jada Gundran finished eighth in 56.74 and 11th in 57.68, respectively.

On the men’s side, both Jack Stollo and Connor Atkinson set new personal records with respective 50.42 and 51.11 finishes while Alexander Merritt ran a season best of 50.47.

Tech’s distance runners added two more personal records in the 3,000 meters led by Daniel Rau’s fourth place finish in 8:30.96. Brent Musselman ran the second personal record in 8:52.95.

James Carver led the Hokies’ jumpers with his 1.98-meter (6-6) high jump to place eighth, followed by Ryan Shepard in 10th and Mackenzie Muldoon in 13th.

Deakin Volz secured the top Tech finish in the pole vault with his 5.37-meter (17-7.25) clearance with Brad Johnson just behind with a 5.22-meter (17-1.5) height.

On the women’s side, Erica Hjerpe and Hannah Meador both earned 3.97-meter (13-0.25) marks.

WINSON SALEM, N.C. - The Virginia Tech track & field team also competed at the UCS Invitational on Saturday afternoon where five additional Hokies posted top results.

Tech’s distance medley relay consisting of Daniel Jaskowak, Neil Gourley, Corey Hackett-Greene and Thomas Curtin secured a second place finish in 9:38.40 to rank sixth in program history.

Stuart Robertson closed out the competition, placing first in the 3,000 meters with a personal best time of 8:16.00.

The Virginia Tech track & field team heads to Boston next weekend for the ACC Championship meet. Competition begins on Thursday lasting through Saturday.
