Cheerleading at Virginia Tech is a challenging and rewarding sport. Each individual works hard to learn new and difficult skills while the coaches actively promote safety. Virginia Tech is known for its clean, creative and innovative style, which highlights each individual's talents in every team performance.
While the squad enjoys competing at UCA Nationals in Orlando, Florida each January, its first priority is promoting Virginia Tech Intercollegiate Athletics and representing the university as a whole. These young men and women have one goal in mind, and that is to generate spirit and crowd involvement at Virginia Tech. In addition to regularly cheering for football and men's and women's basketball games, the team performs at various functions, conducts clinics, participates in numerous community service projects, and consistently qualifies and competes in the UCA College Cheer Championships.
Virginia Tech cheerleading is a major time commitment. The cheerleaders spend eight to twelve hours per week practicing. Practice sessions focus on co-ed partner stunts, pyramids, basket tosses, motion technique, and tumbling, in preparation for games, events and competition. In addition to practice time, Virginia Tech cheerleaders are required to attend workouts with the strength and conditioning coach. Cheerleaders who make the nationals team are also required to attend additional practice hours depending on the time of year. The cheer teams are split into two teams (Maroon and Orange) and are present at both home and away football games, home men's and women’s basketball games, as well as ACC Tournaments and select wrestling duals and home volleyball matches. Occasionally the teams will make appearances at and perform during other home Olympic sport contests.
The squad has been seen on ABC, CBS, NBC, ESPN including College GameDay & Cold Pizza, Fox Sports, The Weather Channel and several other regional networks.
