Tyson Petersheim enters his fifth season on the Virginia Tech baseball support staff, having joined the Hokies ahead of the 2020 season. He previously served as the volunteer assistant coach at Bucknell and was a graduate manager at Missouri, where he earned his master’s degree in educational psychology in 2019.
In his current role, Petersheim primarily assists Virginia Tech offensive coaches Kurt Elbin and Tyler Hanson in preparing baserunning plans and defensive shifting/positioning for the Hokies to utilize during practices and competitions. Additionally, he oversees the preparation of small game applications implemented by the coaching staff at practices.
Petersheim’s contributions helped Tech’s offense achieve an enormity of success during its historic 2022 season, highlighted by the team’s ACC Coastal Division and NCAA Blacksburg Regional championships.
Offensively, the “Hammerin’ Hokies” sported the nation’s second highest slugging percentage (.574) while ranking among the top 15 NCAA Division I programs in home runs (126, 2.14 per game), doubles (140, 2.37 per game), batting average (.309) and scoring (8.7 runs per game). Defensively, Tech placed 15th nationally in fielding percentage (.980), allowing 4.80 runs per game.
Before arriving in Blacksburg, Petersheim spent the 2019 season as the volunteer assistant coach at Bucknell, where he was responsible for development of the outfielders and assisted with the hitters and baserunning.
As the graduate manager at Missouri (2018), Petersheim aided the offensive and defensive coaches during batting practice and infield/outfield drills, helping setup practice and pregame duties.
Prior to working at Mizzou, Petersheim was an assistant coach for the Hornell Dodgers in the New York Collegiate Baseball League during the summer of 2017. He was part of the staff that led the Dodgers to the NYCBL championship. The Dodgers ranked as high as No. 11 in the country for collegiate summer ball teams. The squad hit 42 home runs, while recording a league-record 200 stolen bases.
Petersheim was a four-year member of the baseball team at Lock Haven. He was a team captain during his junior and senior seasons, and as a senior he was part of a team that broke the school record for most wins in a season with 32.
Petersheim graduated from Lock Haven in the spring of 2017 with a Bachelor of Science degree in sport administration along with a minor in business. Petersheim completed his master’s degree in Educational Psychology from the University of Missouri in 2019.
