Hayden Heflin joined the Hokies coaching staff for the 2019 season as a graduate assistant coach helping Coach Ryan Fecteau with the pitchers. Heflin played for five seasons at three different schools before ending his playing career at Virginia Tech. He returned to the Hokies for the 2020 season as a pitching consultant.
During his collegiate time on the mound, Heflin pitched two seasons at Spartanburg Methodist, posting a 2-3 record and a 1.40 ERA with 24 strikeouts in 25.2 innings as a sophomore, while as a freshman in 2014, he was 2-0 record with one save, struck out 14 batters in 18.2 innings with a 3.86 ERA. He helped lead SMC to 2014 NJCAA World Series. After that, he spent two seasons (2016-17) at South Carolina recovering from injury while earning a degree in sociology.
During the 2018 season, Heflin returned from his injury and pitched for the Hokies, appearing in 16 games with three starts, throwing a total of 20 innings and striking out 18 batters.
At Pinewood Prep High School, Heflin earned four varsity letters while playing for coach Phil Tobin, helping the team to the SCISA Class 3A state title in 2012. He was a 2012 Perfect Game Underclass Honorable Mention All-American and a 2013 Atlantic Region player.
Heflin earned a masters in education, curriculum and instruction at Virginia Tech in 2019.
