STANFORD, Calif. — Virginia Tech (4-8, 1-2 ACC) fell to No. 13 Stanford (8-5, 1-2 ACC), 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-23), Friday evening at Maples Pavilion.
The first set opened with the teams trading points before Stanford used a 7-0 run to build a 10-3 advantage and force a Virginia Tech timeout. The Hokies responded with kills from Adeline Hundl and Destiny Walker, along with a service ace from Walker, to cut the deficit to 12-7. Stanford continued to maintain its advantage, extending its lead to 18-7 before Tech answered with kills from Isabela Lopez, Walker and Hundl. The Hokies continued to battle late, but Stanford closed the opening frame, 25-16.
Virginia Tech came out strong in the second set, opening with a 6-0 run highlighted by kills from Hundl and Walker and a pair of Stanford attack errors. Stanford responded to cut the deficit to 7-5, but Tech continued to hold the lead at 11-8. The Cardinal eventually tied the set at 19-19 before taking a 22-19 advantage. Reese Hazelton and Walker answered with consecutive kills to bring Tech within one, while a Stanford attack error and a block from Izzy Mishler and Walker pulled the Hokies within 24-23. Stanford closed the set on the next point, taking the frame, 25-23.
Stanford controlled the third set early, building a 6-3 advantage before extending its lead to 10-6. The Cardinal pushed ahead 15-9 and later used a 9-0 run to take an 18-9 lead. Tech continued to battle, with kills from Walker, Mishler and Frances Torres helping the Hokies cut the deficit to 21-13. Torres added another kill and Stanford committed a service error as Tech moved within 23-14, but the Cardinal closed the match 25-14.
