Tech battles California in four-set match Saturday night

Hazelton leads Tech with 10 kills as Hokies battle Golden Bears

BERKELEY, Calif. — Virginia Tech volleyball fell to California, 3-1 (25-18, 25-18, 18-25, 25-9), Saturday night at Haas Pavilion.

The Hokies battled through a tight opening set, trading points with the Golden Bears before California created separation late. Adeline Hundl led Tech with four kills in the set, while Frances Torres added two kills. Virginia Tech remained within striking distance at 18-17 before California closed the frame on a 7-1 run to take the first set, 25-18.

California built an early advantage in the second set before the Hokies battled back. Tech trailed 17-12 before consecutive points from Destiny Walker and a California attack error brought the Hokies within four. Reese Hazelton then recorded a service ace to cut the deficit to 22-17, but California closed the set, 25-18.

Virginia Tech responded in the third set, using a strong offensive performance to take control. The Hokies opened the set with a 4-1 advantage and later used an 11-0 run to turn a 7-8 deficit into a 19-8 lead. Walker and Hazelton helped fuel the run, while Torres and Hundl contributed kills as Tech maintained its advantage. California attempted to rally late, but the Hokies held off the Golden Bears to secure an 18-25 third-set victory and force a fourth set.

The Golden Bears jumped out to a 10-4 early in the fourth set lead before extending the advantage. California used a 9-0 run to take a 19-7 lead and closed the match with a 25-9 victory.

Hazelton led the Hokies with 10 kills, while Walker and Hundl each recorded nine kills. Torres added four kills, and Mishler finished with one kill. Brandalise paced the Virginia Tech offense with 32 assists, while Cooper led the Hokies defensively with 20 digs.
