ROCK HILL, S.C. — In the first match of the Winthrop Invitational, Virginia Tech fell 0-3 (18-25, 23-25, 20-25) to Winthrop Thursday night at Winthrop Coliseum.

The match opened quickly in favor of the Hokies, who took a 7-5 lead before the Eagles responded to even the score. Tech again tied the set at 12-12, but Winthrop regained control and led 15-13 at the timeout. Kills from Reese Hazelton and Destiny Walker helped keep the Hokies within striking distance, but a 5-0 Eagles run gave Winthrop an eight-point advantage. The Eagles went on to take the opening set, 25-18.

The Hokies started the second set strong with three consecutive kills before Winthrop quickly evened the score at 5-5. After trading points, Tech used a 3-0 run, highlighted by kills from Adeline Hundl and Walker and an Eagles error, to take a 12-9 lead and force a Winthrop timeout. Out of the break, Tech maintained a 15-13 advantage before the Eagles battled back to tie the set at 19-19. Winthrop then scored four straight points to take a 23-19 lead, prompting a Virginia Tech timeout.

Walker responded with a kill out of the break, and the Hokies followed with a 3-0 run sparked by a Winthrop error, blocks from Layla Moore and Hundl, and an ace from Hazelton. The run brought Tech within one at 24-23, but an Eagles kill sealed the second set, 25-23.

Winthrop jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the final set before Tech answered with a 3-0 run to cut the deficit to one at 6-5. Izzy Mishler and Frances Torres Esperanza provided key blocks to keep the Hokies within striking distance, but Winthrop began to create separation with a 14-8 lead. The Eagles maintained their advantage and forced a Virginia Tech timeout at 19-13. Mishler and Hazelton added kills to keep the Hokies on the board, but Winthrop closed out the match, 25-20.
