Walker leads Hokies to four-set win at Clemson

CLEMSON, S.C. — Virginia Tech battled back after dropping the opening set to defeat Clemson, 3-1 (19-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-23), Sunday afternoon at Jervey Gymnasium for its first ACC win of the season.

The Hokies opened the match with an early 2-1 lead before Clemson responded with a 6-0 run to take an 8-2 advantage. Tech battled back to cut the deficit to 19-16, but the Tigers closed the set on a 6-3 run to take the opening frame, 25-19.

Tech came out strong in the second set, taking an early 4-2 lead before Clemson answered to go ahead 6-5. The Hokies regained control behind a 5-0 run to take a 14-11 advantage and continued to pull away, taking the set, 25-17, on a 7-1 run capped by an Izzy Mishler kill to even the match.

The third set featured 13 ties and six lead changes as the two teams battled closely throughout. After Clemson held a 15-13 lead, Tech answered with four straight points to take an 18-17 advantage. The Hokies held off a late Clemson push, scoring the final three points of the set on a kill by Mishler and back-to-back blocks by Mishler and Camilla Brandalise to claim a 25-23 victory.

Clemson jumped ahead 6-4 in the fourth set before Tech rallied to tie the frame at 10-10. The Hokies then used a 5-0 run to take a 15-14 lead and maintained the advantage through the closing points. With the set tied at 23-23, Tech earned a kill from Frances Torres before a Clemson attack error sealed the 25-23 victory and the match.

Walker led the Hokies with 15 kills and 26 digs, marking her second double-double of the season, while Hundl and Lopez each added eight kills, with Lopez’s total marking a career best. Mishler recorded five kills on .231 hitting and led the Hokies with 10 blocks, while Torres finished with six kills. Brandalise tallied a career-best 38 assists, while Cooper led Tech with 25 digs.
