Hokies Battle Northwestern in Competitive Third Set

Tech battles to the finish in the third set but falls to the Wildcats, 3-0, at Welsh-Ryan Arena

EVANSTON, Ill. — Virginia Tech volleyball battled Northwestern throughout Friday night's match at Welsh-Ryan Arena, but the Wildcats secured a 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-23) victory over the Hokies.

Izzy Mishler led the Hokies with nine kills while hitting .471, adding three blocks and an ace for 11.5 points. Adeline Hundl also recorded nine kills, while Layla Moore hit .222 with five kills on nine attacks.

After Northwestern took the opening set, 25-17, the Wildcats built a 15-9 advantage in the second. The Hokies battled back late, cutting the deficit to three at 22-19 following a kill from Hundl, a kill from Mishler and an ace from Camilla Brandalise. Northwestern, however, closed the frame, 25-20.

Tech responded with its strongest set of the night in the third.

The Hokies jumped out to a 10-6 lead after a 4-0 run and continued to trade points with the Wildcats throughout the frame. A kill from Walker tied the set at 21-21 before Hundl gave Tech a 22-21 advantage with her ninth kill of the match.

Northwestern answered with three straight points, but the Hokies stayed within striking distance. After a Northwestern attack error made it 24-23, the Wildcats finished the match on the next point.

Brandalise finished with 20 assists, while Ivy Cooper led the Hokies with 16 digs. Walker added four kills, 11 digs and two blocks, while Reese Hazelton contributed four kills and eight digs.
