Hokie ClubBLACKSBURG — Virginia Tech volleyball concluded its opening weekend of the 2026 season with a 3-1 (25-21, 20-25, 25-16, 25-21) victory over Coppin State on Saturday afternoon, finishing the Hokie Invitational with a 2-1 record.
The Hokies opened the match strong, battling through several early ties before pulling away late in the first set. Destiny Walker paced Tech with eight kills and four digs, while Reese Hazelton added three kills, three blocks and two digs.
With the score tied at 20-20, a Coppin State attack error gave the Hokies a 21-20 advantage. Layla Moore and Adeline Hundl followed with a block to extend the lead to 22-20 and force a Coppin State timeout. Out of the timeout, Hazelton and Moore teamed up for another block before Hundl and Walker recorded back-to-back kills to give Tech the first set, 25-21.
Coppin State answered in the second set, taking a 25-20 win. The Hokies battled through six ties and five lead changes, keeping the Eagles within reach before Coppin State created separation late. Frances Torres led Tech with four kills in the set, but a series of Hokie errors allowed the Eagles to extend their lead and force a Virginia Tech timeout.
Tech responded in the third set, controlling the net and pulling away behind a 5-0 run. Hundl led the Hokies with six kills and two blocks, while Moore added three blocks. Izzy Mishler and Hazelton also contributed to a defensive effort that produced six team blocks in the set.
The teams traded points early, with neither side leading by more than one until the Hokies' 5-0 run created separation. Tech closed the set with a 3-0 run, highlighted by a Hundl kill and a Moore block before a Coppin State attack error gave the Hokies a 25-16 win and a 2-1 match lead.
The Hokies carried the momentum into the fourth set, with Walker and Hundl continuing to lead the offense. Walker recorded four kills and two digs in the set, securing her first double-double of the season with 17 kills and 10 digs. Hundl added four kills and a block in the final frame, finishing with a career-high 13 kills and five blocks as Tech closed out the match with a 25-21 fourth-set victory.
A kill from Mishler, assisted by Camilla Brandalise, sealed the win. Brandalise finished with 29 assists, helping the Hokies post 59 kills while hitting .268 as a team. Virginia Tech also held Coppin State to a .086 hitting percentage.
