CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 13/16 Virginia Tech softball team (46-10, 18-6) dropped a one-run contest to top-seeded No. 8/10 Florida State (49-8, 21-3 ACC) 2-1 in the ACC championship Saturday afternoon at Palmer Park on the campus of the University of Virginia.
How It Happened
The Hokies got the scoring started early as Jordan Lynch crossed the plate from second base as Michelle Chatfield singled to the middle of the infield and beat out the throw to first.
Pitcher Emma Mazzarone struck out the side in the first inning, three of her four in the game.
In the second inning, Florida State scored two runs on a double by Kennedy Harp and a passed ball, taking a lead that the Seminoles would not relinquish.
Freshman pitcher Avery Layton entered the game in the third inning and recorded a strikeout to the first batter, Layton’s first postseason appearance. She sat down three straight Seminoles in 12 pitches.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the ‘Noles had two runners reach base, but they were stranded as Layton forced a groundout from Isa Torres.
Tech loaded the bases in the sixth inning, but were not able to bring any runners home.
Game Notes
• Tech’s record in the ACC Tournament is now 24-20 and 2-2 in championship contests. The Hokies are 21-39 all-time against FSU
• Tech outhit the Seminoles 4-3 and have outhit their opponents in 50 of 56 games this season.
• Emma Mazzarone and Avery Layton combined to allow just three hits in the ballgame.
