BLACKSBURG — In a closely contested match-up, Tech didn't have enough to overcome No. 59 Louisville Friday night, as the Hokies fell 4-3 to the Cardinals.
The Hokies kicked off the match by quickly claiming the doubles point. Drew Fishback and Frank Thompson combined for a 6-1 win to get the match started, making this their third win in a row and sixth ACC doubles win as a pair. Court No. 1 duo Blake Hilton and Eyal Shumilov also had success, marking their fifth ACC doubles victory of the season, notching a 6-2 win to clinch the doubles point. Ilyas Fahim and Patrik Jurina were up 5-4 with the game at deuce when Hilsen and Shumilov clinched the point.
Looking to keep the momentum rolling into singles, Tech battled on all six courts. Four out of six courts went to three sets, with the other two resulting in tiebreakers. Jurina gave the Hokies their second point of the evening, overcoming his opponent 7-6 (7-5), 6-4. Tied at 2-2, senior Julian Lozano gave Tech the advantage, winning 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) on Court No. 5. Though, shortly after the Cardinals tied the match again at three.
Down to the third set on Court No. 3, the Cardinals came out with a win to seal the win for Louisville.
