Virginia Tech Drops 4-1 Match to No. 49 Duke

BLACKSBURG – The Hokies fell 4-1 to No. 49 Duke on Sunday.

Doubles play opened with Blake Hilsen and Eyal Shumilov battling the No. 11 duo of Cooper Williams and Pedro Rodenas. Despite a competitive effort, the Hokies dropped the match 6-3. Virginia Tech responded as Ilyas Fahim and Julian Lozano earned a 6-3 victory to even the doubles matches. Frank Thompson and Drew Fishback then clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win.

Entering singles play with the early lead, the Hokies struggled to maintain momentum, dropping four straight matches as Duke secured the team victory.

Two matches went unfinished. Drew Fishback was tied up in the second set after winning the first, holding a 6-3, 2-4 score against No. 123 Gerard Plannelles Ripoll. Blake Hilsen’s match was also unfinished, trailing 6-4, 2-1.
