BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech dropped its first ACC match of the season Friday afternoon, falling 4-0 to No. 38 SMU.
The Hokies battled through a tightly contested doubles point to open the match. Ilyas Fahim and Patrik Jurina fell 6-2, but Eyal Shumilov and Blake Hilsen responded with a 6-4 win to even the doubles competition. The point came down to Court 3, where Frank Thompson and Drew Fishback rallied from an early deficit to force a tiebreak. Despite the comeback effort, the pair came up short, falling 7-6 (7-3) as SMU secured the doubles point.
In singles play, Tech continued to compete closely across the courts. Fahim pushed No. 1 Trevor Svajda in a competitive match before falling 7-5, 6-4 on Court 1.
Three singles matches were left unfinished, all entering decisive third sets. Jurina held a 6-2, 4-6, 3-0 lead over No. 96 Alex Finkelstein. Julian Lozano led 2-6, 6-3, 3-2, while Fishback was locked in a tight battle at 6-1, 3-6, 4-4 when play was halted.
