BLACKSBURG - Virginia Tech’s home winning streak was cracked by the No. 2 Stanford Cardinal, 16-6, on Tuesday afternoon, as the Cardinal held the Hokies scoreless for almost 42 minutes. The loss drops the Hokies’ record to 4-3 on the season and 1-2 in ACC play.
Tech had a strong first quarter, with sophomore Sarah Murrell putting her squad on the scoreboard just 34 seconds into play. After Stanford found the back of the net twice in response, Reese Wallich slid her seventh goal of the season past the Stanford goalie off of an assist from Mia Pozzi. Murrell then put the Hokies up 3-2, which Stanford equalized towards the end of the quarter, to tie the teams going in the second frame.
Stanford dominated the second quarter, only allowing Tech to fire off two shots.
The Cardinal continued to stifle the Hokies in the third frame, while they added eight goals to their tally.
Tech managed to score three more goals in the final 15 minutes, but it was not enough for the second-ranked team in the nation.
Malie Follet had six saves in goal, and Pitt transfer Paige Kawa made her first start in a Virginia Tech jersey.
